Tagged by @elsajeni (thank you)!  She split hers into âactiveâ and âabandoned,â which Iâm... only sort of going to do, because everything aside from The Fic (yâall know the one by now) gets ruthlessly forced to the eternal backburner to languish the second it starts looking like itâd be enough work that itâd interfere with The Fic.  Work/family life/social life/my goddamn brainweasels all interfere hard enough with the fic as it is.
Active WIPs, or: The Fic, The Magnum Opus, The Giant Sprawling Hobbit Fix-It (that @rakshasi-sue says I am not allowed to call a fix-it despite its happy ending due to all the horrible whumpy nonsense I gleefully pile onto the characters in the meantime)
Chapter Seven is happening!  I have no idea yet what chapter seven will actually be about! Dunlendings with salt mines!  Stonefoots with massive self-contained chemosynthesis-based cave ecoystems!  My ill-advised tendency to let the fact that I personally think dicks are hilarious influence my actual writing!  (I definitely called my local library and asked the poor librarian how the fuck I was supposed to research methods of salt mining in medieval Europe though!  âIs this for schoolâ she asked!  And I had to stutter my way through ânnooo this is for a... uh... a fantasy novel...â!)
chapter 7 is ~5,600 words so far, bringing the ficâs total up to ~263,500 words. Â (FINALLY BEATING ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, HAH.)
Not Abandoned, Hopefully Will Not Take Me Much Longer
@setnet asked âPOVâ for the fic meme so Iâm planning to scribble out the dwarven perspective on the Daeron thing (though @setnet, please feel free to request a POV of something else specifically if youâd prefer)
Probably Abandoned, At Least Until The Hobbit Fic Is Done (In Approximately 50 Years At This Rate, Ugh)
a.) Yoda dies fighting Sidious, Obi-Wan takes Luke & Leia and runs away with Dexter Jettster post-Order 66 to raise them as Jedi as best he can on a merchant freighter (meanwhile, Katooni joins the Ohnaka Gang) Â (meanwhile, an injured-but-definitely-alive Mace Windu finds his tiny grandpadawan Caleb Dume and they start searching the galaxy for other surviving Jedi while helping the fledgeling Rebellion)
b.) an even-by-my-standards-stunningly self-indulgent fic where Ned Stark receives a whole slew of prophetic dreams (and a dĂŠmon direwolf) the night Aerys murders his father and brother, successfully convinces Jon and Robert that the rebellion should not be about seating someone new on the Iron Throne but rather breaking the kingdoms back into seven, and then rescues Elia and her children ostensibly as bargaining chips to get Lyanna back from her captors (but also because Ned is Ned and Ned thinks killing children is bad to do because hes not a horrible monster)
c.) ah yes, the Damerons
d.) Obi-Wan Leaves The Jedi Over A Misunderstanding; Jedi Apprentice!verse, Â could also be titled Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan Talk Past Each Other: The Fic (donât worry Qui-Gon manages to straighten things out and bring him back but only after a contrivedly long series of adventures that feature truly ridiculous amounts of Missed Him by That Much)
e.) Obi-Wan/Satine year-on-Mandalore (can I even call myself an Obitine shipper if I donât have at least one of these I mean honestly)
f.) Obi-Wan/Commander Cody, Fake/Pretend Relationship For Purposes of Undercover Work (doylistically itâs also for the excuse to have Obi-Wan wear pretty skirts & show lots of skin)
g.) When Sidious commands Dooku to kill Ventress to prove his loyalty, Dooku agrees to his face then immediately comms Ventress, orders her home RIGHT NOW YOUNG LADY, reveals the whole plot to the Senate, helps the Jedi overthrow Sidious & de-chip the clones, then looks really smug when the Republic agrees to recognise the Confederacy as an independent body and thereâs peace in the galaxy and the Jedi arenât allowed to hunt him down as a Sith because heâs out of their judisdiction now, and in fact they have to stand there next to Republic dignitaries at diplomatic functions between the two political entities and furiously grind their teeth at his existence (meanwhile he hasnât noticed how much lighter his and Ventressâ auras are slowly getting oops)  (meanwhile Ventress and Obi-Wan keep meeting at these same diplomatic functions and dancing incredible Force-assisted tangoes together (meanwhile in a 20 mile radius of this event bodices ripping men turning bisexual it was amazing the end))
h.) listen unfortunately Iâm probably going to write a âwhile living in the Blue Mnts the Ereboreans encounter a dark-haired Noldo with a very sad, very beautiful voice whoâs just wandering up and down the shoreline spilling haunting laments all over the landscape & they eventually get fed up & just kidnap him underground and use sacred hospitality as an excuse to be very stern about oneâs need to eatâ because please someone take care of my poor precious kinslaying baby
i.) Iâm not realistically planning to write this one but. Â Stratford Festival did a production of The Changeling by Thomas Middleton and it was very good and the ending was a good ending, it was perfect and cathartic and I am so glad of it but Have You Considered A Version Where The Bad Guys Win, Sincerely, SilentStep
(itâs so easy, listen, when Alcemero locks Joanna in the room and confronts De Flores with his knowledge of the murders right outside, within earshot, De Flores hears enough and then, breathing heavily, shouts Joanna!  Permission! and thereâs a two-and-a-half-second extremely charged silence before she cries Granted! in a voice that nearly breaks-- and De Flores leaps forward and kills Alcemero.  And then the others come in but the two of them donât even need to discuss their story to get it straight: O, Lord de Piracquo, here is the body of the man who murdered your brother, we are so sorry you could not kill him yourself but when Joanna found Lord Alonzoâs ring in her husbandâs medicine-chest and confronted him he threatened her but she had already told De Flores as insurance so he locked her up and tried to kill De Flores intending to kill her afterward but De Flores killed him in self-defense-- oh, right, sure, he had an alibi for the time of the murder, but that was because heâd paid Antonio to actually do the deed & then disappear.
The innocent Tony is put to death. Â Jasperino flees in the night. Â Tomazo departs with some closure. Â And for his services, Joanna manages to suggest in such a way that her father thinks it was his own idea, De Flores gets her hand in marriage.
She turns up pregnant quick enough that rumors start that her son is actually Alcemeroâs-- he does resemble De Flores, but itâs hard for people who wonât look past his fatherâs birthmark to tell.  eventually the kid goes to his mother and asks her, shaky-voiced, if sheâs sure heâs his fatherâs son, what if heâs not, what if heâs really the son of a murderer--
and Joanna goes to her knees and takes his shoulders in her hands and looks him steadily in the eyes and says, low-voiced and sure, An thou wert the son of two murderers, it could not make thee other than thou art, nor would we love thee less.)
I mean uh..................... I have morals
unfortunately Iâm... actually unsure who of you guys are writing stuff!  @ravensrising, @setnet, @edgewitch, @rubyredboots, @sandovers, @notbecauseofvictories, come on anyone who writes stuff pls do this meme & pretend I tagged you I want to know what youâre working on

Sheâd drawn back from the womanâs embrace and looked her carefully in the eye. Â Rey was still having a hard enough time assimilating that Han Solo, smuggler pilot, had had a son. Â But it followed that his son, monster that he was, had had a mother. Rey just hadnât expected to be faced with that factânevermind with her personâso soon. Â Yet here before her stood Han Soloâs widow: sheâd known it the instant sheâd stepped off the entry ramp and seen the terrible, knowing grief in the womanâs eyes. Â She hadnât been trying to look past Rey for anyone else coming down behind her. Chewbacca mustâve commed her.
âYouâre shaking,â said the woman, chafing her hands along Reyâs upper arms. Â More people have touched Rey skin-to-skin in the last two days than in the last two months before them. Â âAre you hurt? Â Letâs get you a coat, I know Han took one with himââ Â She moved to enter the Falcon, and Rey caught the womanâs shoulder with an inarticulate noise. Â She could not wear Han Soloâs coat. Â She could not make his widow go digging through his things right now for Reyâs sake.
âIâm alright, I justâ I need to go with Finn,â she said, heart in her throat again. Â Not an hour ago, Finn had given her his own coat. Â His beautiful soft leather coat, BB-8âs dead masterâs coat, now slashed and seared and bloodied as its ownerâ Â She swallowed hard. Â âChewbacca said theyâd take good care of him, I justâdo you know where theyâve taken him?â
The womanâ Leia, Han called her Leiaâ motioned to a golden protocol droid with a red left arm. Â âThreepio, will you take her to medical? Â If youâre hurt at all, please tell them so,â she added, turning back to Rey. Â âAnd if youâre not, theyâll give you something warm to wrap up in, anyway.â
âYes, PrincâGeneral,â the droid said, bowing ever so slightly at the waist, and raised its red arm to Rey. Â âThis way, please.â
***
The droid gestured her down a hallway, at which point Rey thanked him and dashed ahead, impatient with the shuffling pace sheâd previously had to keep toâ but having burst in, she found herself surrounded by beds, bacta tanks, curtained-off chambers, and a bustle of personnel both organic and droid more seemingly chaotic than any Jakku market. Â She hesitated, hovering in the doorway. Â Pulling anyone aside might jeopardize someone they were going to helpâ might jeopardize Finn himself.
âHeyâ Gentlebeingâ are you hurt?â came a voice, and she jumped at its proximity: a strikingly handsome Human in the orange fatigues of a Resistance pilot took her carefully by the elbow. Â âSit down, Iâll get a medic.â Â He turned to a passing orderly, but Rey caught him by the sleeve.
âNo, Iâm fine, Iâm here for my friendâ Finn, he was injured, heâs Human, about my age, wearing a brown leather jacket with a red right shoulder, heâs a little taller than I amââ Â Finn was lying horizontal on a gurney somewhere, so that was useless, but the pilot was nodding anyway.
âI know, itâs okay, Iâm here for him too. Â They took him into surgery already, theyâll let us know how heâs doing as soon as they can. Â Come on, sit down. Â Itâll be alright.â
He led her back into the corridor to a low bench along the wall. She sat, hugging herself, still feeling cold and starting to feel numb. Â âThey said so?â
âSaid what?â
âThat heâd survive.â
He knelt in front of her, looking her steadily in the eye. Â âHeâs in good hands, I promise. Â Dr. Kaloniaâs a surgeon in a million. Â Are you the friend of his the First Order captured on Takodana? Â Youâre really not hurt?â
âA bit bruised,â she admitted. Â Sheâd likely be feeling every contour of that tree along her back in the morning. Â With the adrenaline rush having died down, she was conscious enough of the pain. But sheâd walked away from plenty worse. âA headache.â Â She shrugged; to her frustration, her eyes were tearing up again anyway. Â âIâll be fine,â she repeated, setting her jaw.
But the pilot had gone still and pale. Â âDidâ Kylo Ren, he interrogated you?â
Sheâd thought Han had said Ben, but it had echoed so. Â âI didnât tell him anything,â she said quickly, tensing. Â âI didnât give him what he wanted, all he got wasâ useless, tactically; I swear it.â
âYou did well, you got through it, youâre away now,â said the pilot. âIâm so sorry. Â Kriff, I am sorry. Â Youâre safe now. Â Youâre home safe.â Â He had taken her hands in his. Â This had now been more people touching her without violence in short order than Rey could even remember.
His skin, too, was warm against hers. Â The unbelieveable chill of Starkiller Base still hadnât let her go. âI didnât kill him,â she reported miserably. Â âI wasnât fast enough, and then the planet was coming apart underneath us.â Â Ren may have killed Finn, and Rey hadnât had the guts to step forward and finish him off when sheâd still had the chance.
She flinched at the reflexive thought that had warred against desperation for as long as she could remember: that when her family came back, sheâd have to tell them how sheâd lived in their absence. Â And if they didnât like her answers, they might decide to leave again. She couldnât steal; couldnât murder. Would killing Ren have been murder? Sheâd always gone to Constable Zuvio, whenever sheâd run across dilemmas, and asked him for advice on the legality or ethics of her options. Â Who could she trust enough to ask, here?
<Rey!> beeped a familiar tone, and BB-8 rolled almost into her shins. <Rey is alive! Â Rey is here! Â Master, look, Rey!> Â Drawing back slightly, the droid then did bump her shins, gently as a flutter of clothing. Â <Rey is hurt badly?>
âIâm fine,â said Rey, overwhelmed and starting to get suspicious about being met with so much concern. Â What did it matter to all these people? Â Perhaps they had all come to care about Finn, as she had, and this was for his sake? âFinnâs the one whoâs hurt.â
âHeâs being treated, BB-8,â said the pilot, letting go one of Reyâs hands to place his palm over BB-8âs head, mindful of the antenna. Â âTheyâre looking after him, donât worry.â
âYouâre BB-8âs new master?â Rey asked softly, feeling a little better about the droidâs prospects. Â âIâm sorry about Poe Dameron.â
The pilot blinked at her, startled.  âIâm⊠sorry?  What did I do?â
BB-8 whirled his head around and thumped into the shin of Poeâs forward leg with significant force. Â <She thought you were dead, too. Â Like we all did.>
âOh, buddy,â Poe murmured, and to Reyâs surprise, pressed a kiss just above BB-8âs primary photoreceptor. Â âIâm alright.â Â He gave Rey a smile, small but sincere. Â âIâm Poe Dameron. Â Thanks for helping BB-8. Â You and Finn completed my missionâ the Resistance is grateful, and I am too.â Heâd slung an arm around the droidâs body, and was allowing his hand to be poked at by one of BB-8âs attachments with only minimal wincing. Â âHey, listen, Iâm sorry if this is presumptuous, but is there anyone you need to comm, tell them youâre okay? Â I can step out for a while, BB-8 can relay your messageâ and wonât repeat anything to me, either.â
âNo,â said Rey. Â âI just need Finn to survive.â
âOh.â Â Poe blinked. âYouâre another escaped Stormtrooper?â
She shook her head. Â âIâm a Jakku scavenger. Â Iâmââ Â Iâm no one was on the tip of her tongue; she bit it back without quite knowing why. âIâm Rey.â
This time, Poe Dameronâs smile was wide, and as soft and warm as his jacket. âItâs good to meet you, Rey.â
***
She started getting drowsy after another few minutes of motionlessness, the tension of worry having left her singing nerves exhausted. Â Drowsy enough, apparently, that an impulsive desire to take Poeâs hand kept surfacing; she thought he could use the comfort as well as she. Â He had kept an arm around BB-8, and the droid passed the time humming little snatches of nonsense-tones like Rey had never heard from any droid on Jakku. Â Perhaps it was a different dialect of Binaryâ she was unfamiliar with the existence of any, but that certainly didnât preclude their existence.
Droids and beings had come in and out of the medical center several times while they had been waiting, each time causing the two of them to come to stiff attention like theyâd heard the failing whine of crashing ships. Â Poe had spoken to no few of them, clearly on friendly terms with most, professional with the others. Â They called him Commander or Dameron and referred to Finn as his friend, as his soldier. Still in surgery, they said. Donât worry. Â You know what the Doc can pull off.
Poe thanked them, whether they had news or no.
***
After another hour Rey had jittered off the bench and started pacing. Â BB-8 rolled carefully at her heels, and they paraded back and forth across the hallway until she found herself feeling too conscious of the ridiculous picture they made and sat down: it was that or snap at BB-8, who didnât deserve it.
âSo tell me how you know Finn?â Poe rasped, then, scrubbing the back of a hand across his forehead. Â He looked as worn-out as Rey felt.
âHow do you?â she countered, not ready to talk about everything that had happened; to her surprise, Poe looked across at her and did, starting with General Organa having sent him on a solo mission deep behind enemy lines.
Rey sat cross-legged and listened, as he talked about the slaughter of diasporic Alderaanians and withstanding interrogation only to have a creature in a mask tear apart his mind to just take what he wanted (she was startled, again, by the impulse to take his hand. Â She didnât, but she had to clench her fists against it).
âI should have killed him,â she startled both of them by interrupting, and drew her knees up to her chest. Â âIâm sorry I didnât kill him.â Â Kylo Ren, or Ben, or whatever his name wasâ he may have killed Finn. He had made gracious Poe Dameronâs voice grate with remembered pain. Â He had stolen Han Solo from the galaxy. Â He had made Chewbacca scream. Heâd put that awful yawning grief in Leiaâs eyes.
âThe Generalâs probably not,â Poe responded, and she couldnât decide if he sounded wry or bitter.
<I might be,> BB-8 muttered.
She liked better when he talked about Finn, about Finn having appeared like a miracle, his bravery and skill and spirit. Less, the harsh realization that Finn was likely dead, having no way to search for BB-8 without equipment or transport, and being stranded onplanet within a radius of walking distance until he could find someone to charm into giving him a ride. Â But hearing that BB-8 had made it to Takodana ahead of the First Order, and then finding Finn again, getting BB-8 safely to the Resistanceâ Finnâs determination to save Reyâ the battle that had gone on in space while sheâd been inside the base, their triumphant return, then seeing Finn limp in Chewbaccaâs arms.
It seemed a terrible end to the story, so she told him hers, starting with hearing a droid shouting in angry, desperate binary that his master was coming back for him, had promised to come back for him, and BB-8 had to be waiting there when he did, let him go, leave him alone.
BB-8 rolled away from her upon hearing her recount this, into Poe, who actually picked the droid up and cradled him on his lap like a parent with a child, arms wrapped around BB-8âs round body. Â BB-8 headbutted his collarbone, not gently, the thump of it loud in the corridor.
âHey,â said Poe. Â âI did come back. Â Donât be like that.â
<Sure, with your nailbeds all punctured,> BB-8 retorted, and Poe flinched slightly.
âIâm fine. I was cleared for battle within hours of checking in. Â I was, in fact, brilliantly winning dogfights with TIE-fighters within hours of checking in.â
<Stupid reckless pilot,> BB-8 said, but didnât attempt to move.
Poe smiled up at Rey. Â âIâm sorry about this tiny spherical menace of an astromech. Thank you,â he added, arms tightening on the droid, and Rey smiled back.
***
It was, as sheâd thought, still far too soon to talk about Han Solo. Â But she said a little, and BB-8 filled in some, and Poeâs eyes were sympathetic and understanding. Â âI didnât know him well,â he said, âbut I did know him some, if you do want to talk about him sometime. Â Forever heâll soar between the stars,â he finished softly, which had the cadence of a ritual phrase.
Rey nodded, unsure if there was a scripted response to give back; the Teedo had phrases like that, could have entire conversations in formal call-and-response. Â They didnât like talking to other species more than absolutely necessary. Â She had never been able to learn much. Â âI donât know where Iâm going now,â she confessed. Â âI donât know if Iâll be here.â Â She thought about that for a minute, turning it around in her head, the vast unknown of her future stretching ahead like starlines. Her life until now had been one single goal: survive until her family came back.
If they werenât coming back⊠if sheâd accepted that⊠then she could do anything.  She was trying not to be afraid of that.
âIâm a pilot,â she said finally. Â âAnd a mechanic. Â Could you use me in the Resistance?â
âWe lost the equivalent of a whole squadron of starfighters taking out that base, we could use a mouse droid if it showed up and wanted to fly for us.â Â He shrugged slightly. Â âPayâs not great, life expectancyâs short. Â Foodâs monotonous, accommodations are usually cramped and sometimes pretty mimimal. Medical careâs not bad when we can get the supplies.â
âThatâs not much of a pitch.â
âOh, itâs a pitch you want?â Â He scraped himself to his feet and posed, stance wide, head lifted, helmet under one arm. Â Rey half-expected a breeze to appear in the corridor to ruffle through his hair. Â âBB-8, give us a slogan.â
<âAre You With Him?â> Â BB-8 chirped readily. <âStand With Him!â Â âHe Canât Do It Alone!â Â âAre You Content For Him To Fight For YOU?â Â âRemember Hosnian!â>
âToo soon, buddy,â said Poe grimly, flopping back down.
<âThis Is Poe Dameron,â> BB-8 continued undiscouraged. Â <âHe Just Destroyed A First Order Superweapon The Size Of A Planet In A T-70 X-Wing Starfighter. Â Where Did He Learn To Fly Like That? Â Find Out! Join The Resistance Today!â>
âYeah, I had some help,â he said, grinning at Rey.
âSo did I,â she answered, her own smile dimming, because two-thirds of it was dead or dying right now.
âHeâs tough, heâll be fine,â said Poe, kind and sure; and then âHeâll be fine,â again, pressing his thumbs into the upper edges of his eye-sockets and letting his breath out in a sigh, not long but deep.
âHeâll be fine,â Rey found herself saying: quiet, as if to herself, but Poe smiled at her with long-lashed tired eyes, and it felt like Finn saying you looked at me like no one ever had. Â Rey had seen her reflection more than a handful of times in her life, by now, but it had never been anything more than a source of low-key distress at how unrecognizable sheâd grown. Â She wasnât sure how to assimilate this strike of bone-deep surety that for the second time sheâdâ given a gift to someone whoâd needed it, just byâ by a look.
***
They waited. Â At some point they counted off languages, trying to find others in common besides Basic and Binary. Â Poe could say a few phrases in Shyriiwook, as could Rey, but hers were mostly things like accusations of Thief; Liar; Swindler; Cheat; No way this piece of junk is worth the price youâre asking; and his were more along the lines of I need to find a long-range communications station; I need transportation, I can/cannot pay; Iâm with the Resistance; Thank you for your generous assistance. They found a few they both knew: Please, I need water; Please, I need shelter; Please, I need a place to hide.
They taught each other simple phrases in others. Curses, prices, calls for help, pick-up lines, tongue-twisters. Â Traded Crolute for Sullustan, Nu-Cosian for Mandoâa. Â Held a short contest of boasts and insults in Huttese.
Later she wouldnât remember how or why they ended up arm-wrestling, lying prone on their stomachs with their elbows on the ground, lips bitten eyes squinted muscles straining, BB-8 metronomically counting and tilting wobblingly far over to get a better angle on who was winning. She would vividly remember how it had shifted into an actual wrestling match and from there to a dirty scrap: they pulled back panting with bright new bruises and wrenched joints and a few bloody toothmarks here and there.
They took turns catching and pushing BB-8 from each of them to the other while the droid whistled what Rey knew was gibberish and was starting to suspect was BB-8âs version of singing, idle and simple.
They waited.
***
There werenât windows in the corridor, and they were already underground, but even in the unaccustomed humidity Rey could guess when night had fallen, the air cooling down and the sound of a generator kicking in somewhere behind the walls.
She was used to the deep cold of desert nights. Here it was a different sort, and in terms of temperature she was sure it was measureably warmer, but the moisture in the air was clammy on her skin. Â Hours and hours ago, Finn had given her his jacket. Â Poeâs jacket. Â Gashed open now, scorched brittle along its woundsâ edges. Â At home in the AT-AT, she had blankets, hard-earned; poor bargains, as all necessaries came. Â She had extra wraps for if she needed to be moving around. Â She wondered if theyâd been looted by now. Â Surely she had a little time, bought with a reputation for ruthlessness and skillâ that, too, hard-earned. Â But anyone who had seen her leaveâin the company of a strange offworlder, in a freighter stolen from her master/benefactor, pursued by the First Orderâmight think they had reason enough to believe she wouldnât return.
They might even be right. Â The thought was simultaneously appalling and prosaic.
âYouâre shivering,â said Poe, and then, before she could respond, âgive me a minute.â Â He stepped into the medical bay for maybe thirty seconds and returned with a silvery-gray blanket crumpled in his arms. Â He shook it out and BB-8 rolled along its bottom edge, letting it drape over his head, until Poe had wrapped it around Reyâs shoulders.
She tugged it closed, frowning. Â Leia had said that she could get something warm to wear at medical, but Rey had assumed this meant sheâd need to trade something for it. She looked Poe up and down, but the flightsuit was shapeless enough that she couldnât tell if anything substantial was gone from the pockets. Â âI wonât be in debt to you,â she warned; he could take that as either refusal or offer to pay him back, as he chose, and she would know how to proceed.
âOkay,â he answered easily, too easily; âwhat for?â
âWhatever you just paid for the blanket.â
âOh, youâre serious,â he said after a second, and joined her on the floor. Â âI didnât pay a thing for the blanket, promise. Â They like me here, I win battles for them.â
<Huzzah!> BB-8 cheered obligingly. Â <To victory!>
Favors, Rey thought sourly. Â Of all the currencies sheâd rather not deal in, favors topped the list.
On the other hand, there was sometimes use in letting someone remember that you owed them. Â When Rey had been a very small child, sheâd had to follow other scavenging crews. Â Theyâd occasionally gone so far as to keep her from getting herself hurt or killedâa dead scavenger, even an inexperienced and undersized one, couldnât pay you back for the time and energy youâd spent showing her what to do, nevermind the portions sheâd eaten.
Aware she was rationalizing, she clutched the blanket tightly around herself anyway, tired and heartsick and the headache still thumping in her temples. Â She wanted desperately to cry for Han Soloâs death, and here on this planet with its curling vines and humidity heavy in the air she could probably even afford toâbut sheâd cried so much today already, more than she had for years previous, she was sure, and no more tears came.
She shuffled her back against the wall. After a moment Poe joined her, legs straight out, hands resting on orange-clad thighs, BB-8 quiescent at his other side. Â He was only slightly taller than she was, and probably of a height with Finn.
After a long moment, Rey flipped the lower corner of the blanket over his legs, carefully avoiding his gaze.
***
âAww look at you two,â someone crooned, and Rey jerked awake, stifling a yelp. Â âI mean, you look adorable, but uh, the heroes of the hour are sacked out in a hallway why? Â Thereâs a hell of a party going on and youâre missing it.â
âPava, I say this with all love,â came Poeâs voice right beside her ear, gravelly with sleep. Â âFuck the fuck off and enjoy the party, ok?â
âThat was almost rude and I am very proud of you,â Pava announced, raising an eyebrow. Â She was a petite woman, though she didnât have the look of the chronically underfed or water-starvedâ Rey could tell that much even with the baggy pilotâs flightsuit. Â âIntroduce me to your friend, will you? Â Just kidding. You must be Rey.â Â Pava jerked her chin. Â âIâm Jess Pava, callsign Blue Three. Â Poeâs runaway stormtrooper would not shut up about you.â
Reyâs legs had relaxed in sleep, her knees tucked in against Poeâs thighs; now she drew them up and wrapped her arms around them. âYeah. Â He came back for me,â she managed through her tightening throat, and to her surprise, she felt Poeâs arm tighten around her waist, tooâwhen had heâ?
âWeâre waiting on word of his condition,â he said, dragging his other hand down his face. Â âOnce we know heâs stable, Iâm sure weâll be in more of a mood to celebrate. Alright?â
âAlright, Black Leader,â said Pava, throwing him a quick and slightly uncoordinated salute. Â âForce be with him. Â See you later.â Â She ambled away, the weaving of her steps barely noticeable as anything more than a sway to her hips.
Rey worked her jaw slightly, swallowingâ there was so much moisture in the air!â and contemplated with baffled wonder this hitherto unprecedented situation: sheâd fallen asleep in someone elseâs company. Not only that, sheâd apparently shifted until her head rested on his shoulder, and his cheek had been leaning on her crown.
His arm was still around her waist. Â Her knee had fallen against his thigh again.
She must be more exhausted than sheâd thought. Rey had known better than to so let down her guard around strangers since before sheâd outgrown the clothes sheâd arrived in.
âIâve never slept with anyone before,â she mumbled, still anxious and still tired.
âYouâve got time,â Poe answered her, still in that rasp of a voice, and sounding much as he had when sheâd brought up debt: as if she was mystifying him but he was willing to reach out and clasp hands if she was. Â Twenty-four hours ago she wouldnât have known what that sounded like.
She was grateful, abruptly, powerfully, that Poe had been there for Finn to rescue, to help Finn escape.
She hoped Poe would have the chance to be grateful to her for saving Finn from Kylo Ben and the collapsing base.
Impossibly, she slept again. Â Impossibly, feeling as she drifted off, her head on Poeâs shoulder. His temple against her hair, tugging the strands from their bun. Â Leaning into his side under his arm, like BB-8 was doing on his right. Â Thinking Finn, Finn, please, Finn, please, intuiting with easy certainty that Poeâs thoughts were mirroring hers.
***
Someone cleared their throat and this time Rey came awake more slowly, opening her eyes and picking up her head to look at them, less disoriented than before. Â A tallish woman stood before them, pale-skinned with dark brown hair, on the older side of middle age. Â Poe tensed hard beside her and started to scramble to his feet, bracing one hand on BB-8, cupping Reyâs elbow briefly with the other in a tacit offer to help her rise should she choose to lean into it. Â She didnât, but she found that she liked that heâd offered.
âDoctor,â he was saying, which Rey had guessed; her heart had already started pounding wildly the second Poeâs spine had stiffened. Â âIsââ
The doctor was smiling, if tiredly; she was meeting Poeâs eyes easily. Â âYour friendâs going to be alright,â she said. Â âItâll take a few weeks before heâs back on his feet,â she said, and other things, but Rey had stopped listening, just grabbed Poe Dameronâs hand in hers and held on tight, breath coming in gasps.
guys I understand why itâs easy to get this mixed up but there were a whole bunch of lines in the trailer that werenât in the movie. Rey never says âIâm no one,â Finn never says âIâve got nothing to fight for,â Maz never says anything about hope awakening or whatever.  I get that for a long time all we had was the trailer but so many people are just flat-out misremembering the actual movie dialogue.
*shoves pile of ticket stubs out of sight* Â not... that Iâve seen it enough times to really be sure... ha ha ha... ha...
