I want to preface this by saying I absolutely love the series. It was a great homage to so many of Kirby’s characters. I loved how it put focus onto Forager’s identity crisis and had him work towards embracing himself as he is and not try to hide himself anymore. I loved the interpretation of the source and the whole thing about the relationship between the hand and the mind was really interesting.

However, the stereotypical quippy sidekick personality was not it. I definitely think that Forager has a spunky and mischievous side but this just felt like they were trying to turn him into Spider-Man. I love the idea of Forager learning how to act his age sometimes but this wasn’t the way to do it.

I really do think that Kirby had bigger plans for Forager if New Gods hadn’t been cut short. I mean he found out that the run was being cancelled and decided to spend two whole issues introducing Forager’s character despite most likely having to clip the ending short to do so. This was clearly a part of the story he felt was extremely important to include. And there’s just this missing story gap between his introduction to being a soldier for New Genesis. I really want to see everyone’s reaction to Orion dragging Forager home like a stray cat he found. Although that thing with Orion leaving him with Victor and forgetting about him was actually pretty funny.

I feel like Kirby intended for the injustices against the bugs to be more of a commentary on Highfather’s faults as a character, not Orion’s. Highfather preaches peace and acceptance but that sentiment clearly doesn’t apply to everyone which I think is a great commentary on hypocrisy in leadership.
