You have in the past, but could you share some of your foraging ideas for pellets? I have small roudybush crumbles for my lovebirds and parakeet and would love more ideas for them to work at good while I'm away.
For sure! I thought I had a masterpost but I could not find it so here we go!
Cat/ mammal puzzle feeders
there's a ton of varieties that can work for birds, we use the Buggin' out puzzle feeder by Petstages. Many need to be supervision only though due to moving parts, don't want anyone getting their toes caught on anything!
Scatter Trays
This could be a plate or surface with a variety of toy parts, timothy hay, or shredded paper. Scatter the pellets in amongst the shreds for them to peck through and toss around while they search for the pellets. Dog snuffle mat designs could be used as well!
Cup Foragers
My all time favourite is Bael seed pods, simple enough, little cups that the birds can tip or lift up lids to open and access pellets. There's a ton of different materials you can use, woven baskets, cardboard, etc. Just make sure the holes the string goes through are sealed with paper shreds or something!
Drawer Foragers
Still my all time favourite small bird pre-made forager is the kaytee peek n pull, little drawers they can open to access the pellets. There are a bunch of other drawer-based foragers that would work for medium-large birds as well.
Finger Traps
cheap and easy! Fill the finger trap with pellets then close off the ends with paper shreds or other materials. You can leave one end open or just loosely stuff to make them easier and gradually increase the difficulty. (also easy to hide in new locations around a cage/ room!)
Scatter Bowls
Fill a food dish with big toy parts and scatter the pellets on top, the bird has to toss the toy parts out of the bowl in order to find the pellets. Easy to increase difficulty with larger/ heavier/ more toy parts. Little harder than scatter trays as the pieces need to be lifted and removed in order to access the pellets.
Paper Folding
Theres a ton of origami designs that can be made to contain seeds, the bird would need to rip through the paper to access the pellets. Folded boxes, balloons, or simple rolls are a few examples.
