Artreyu was the centaur in charge of looking after the four young dragons. Their wellbeing, their upbringing, and their safety fell to him and his sister, Teylah. It was a duty they did not take lightly. There was hardly a time when the children were not under a watchful eye. Yet, this day was different than the rest. A particularly beautiful day and the centaurs had thrown a lavish party for the woodland creatures who surrounded their magical kingdom. Satyrs, nimphs, sprites, fae, and many others had traveled from far around to celebrate the Winter Solstace, and consequently Skadi’s birthday. Yet, when it came time to crown her with a diadem of icy crystals, she, along with her three siblings, were nowhere to be found, causing an uproar.

Ix, the eldest at seven years of age, had led his sisters on a quest. It was supposed to only be play. Yet, as children often do, they wandered too far from the boundaries which had been set for them. Scylla, the youngest, at three, he carried on his back, while Saryx, the second eldest at six, and Skadi, now only turning five, held hands as they explored the outskirts of the woods. It was the forbidden place. They, nor anyone else from their kingdom, were allowed to venture this far. It was simply too dangerous, for it was the border lands with the humans.

“Ixa! I hear something, there!” Saryx stopped her brother and pointed due East. Her tightly coiled firey red locks fell into her face ans she brushed them out of the way impatiently. “It sounds of a metal horse??! Do such things exist?” Her eyes, the color of sunflowers on a sunny summer day, were wide with curiosity.

“Don’t be silly, Sary! There’s no such thing as a metal horse!!” Skadi looked up at her older sister as if she had grown a third head.

“Well, there’s only one way to find out, isn’t there?!” Ix wiggled his eyebrows at the two girls before running toward the sound. Tge only choice Saryx and Skadi had were to chase after him. All the while calling to him that it wasn’t fair that he had much longer legs than they.

However, as the trees thinned and the siblings emerged into the human realm, they found themselves in a world totally alien to their own. They jumped out of the way as a large bus zoomed passed them and all around people walked right on by without a second thought. Theu dodged several people before Skadi was knocked over and fell to tge cold concrete with a cry, skinning her hands and knees.
