“the stars fade, the night shade falls and makes the world afraid,” she does not turn to face the other, wind tearing at the soft fabric of her turquoise gown. golden circlet and earing glint and glitter in the water light the pale moon beams down. it is getting cold here, chill carried up from the sea, but dahut does not seem to mind even as gooseflesh raises on bare arms. she is too busy staring across the waves at the large, beastly face of the sea-monster of ys that stares back at her. they are SOMETHING - something bound, something terribly linked - and dahut can see herself reflected in its eyes even this far off.
“it waits in silence for the sky to explode.” they are of the same stuff, the sea-beast and the princess, born to the same salt-water and bitter cold. dahut blinks and the creature sinks beneath the waves. she does not think of the ships it has sunk at her behest, nor the flickering light of headless spirits that linger at the foot of the cliff, staring, watching, WAITING. when she turns it is with a smile, “there is no need to fear it. not while you are here.”
