I'm reaching a point of such immense frustration with small business owners who believe that their social and political morality absolves them of the need to run their business appropriately. It's great that you can hang a rainbow flag and have QR codes to donate to mutual aid funds at the register, but you can't expect my sympathy when you can't conduct business anymore because your building fails to meet fire code requirements.
#this plus a bunch of other stuff local businesses have been doing lately#and this also isn't getting into the insistence of people wanting to have art and merch businesses#when they know that they cannot sustain that level of committment and time management#but like a literal local venue who is a pillar of the more irl progressive and leftist spaces in the city was shut down#for fire code violations#and they made a big long video about how they've been 'trying to work with the city' on this#and I'm like... look. some rules are dumb and stuff yes. but a music venue whose ceiling doesn't meet fire code?#y'all that's a big fucking deal those rules aren't for funsies#and I get that people have disabilities and mental health issues and that shouldn't preclude anyone from owning a business#but if it precludes you from treating your employees appropriately or managing other people's funds#you do not need to be a business owner#like I'm so glad that you support the progressive city council candidates that's awesome#but not everyone needs to or can run their own business where they are responsible for managing employees and people's safety
