❝Of course!❞ Rise managed a cheerful, and hopefully well meaning, laugh. It was still hard to wrap her head around the fact that this situation had come to pass. She wasn’t even sure whether to classify it as bad luck or coincidence…

If you wanted a coffee, you wouldn’t get much better than Junes. At least, not in Inaba. She had decided to have a day to herself— to clear her head after certain events that had caused her a certain unrest. So it was with the warm drink in her hand, she settled down on a bench to bask in the Sunday morning light. If you came early enough, you avoided most of the rush.

She had only just began to sip at her ‘well earned’ treat before a familiar face stepped into her line of sight, simply from the line of sight she had fate caused their eyes to meet. It was none other than Adachi-san. At his recognition she raised a hand to wave in pleasant greeting, however instead of passing by the rookie cop decided to have a word. Before she knew, he had a drink of his own and had slouched down in the seat opposite her. 

And so; here they were. 

The young officer was more than receptive to even her simple questions, springing into a flurry of words and gestures that one could almost expect from a talk show host on tv. Adachi seemed to take great pride in his work, and was spurred to life by even the softest compliment. The young idol assumed Dojima-san must not praise him much. 

Though he made a show of purchasing a black coffee, he took meager sips, until at one point he returned to the counter for a small cup of milk to take away some of the bite. Her own drink was quite weak, sweetened with syrup and copious amounts of milk. They must’ve spent well over half an hour speaking between each other, and by the end she was more curious than anything. 

The disembark was cut away quickly with a startled glance at his phone, yet he offered her a crooked smile before lopping away, coffee abandoned behind him.

With an abrupt clatter and a loud smack she was on her feet. Her palm stung and flushed from the impact of the glass, yet she hardly felt it as her anger boiled up like a kettle above a flame. 

❝Don’t give me such bullshit!❞ She spat, nerves tightening from head to toe. ❝You said you lost! We beat you! There’s no use in you playing this game any longer!❞

Though he seemed slightly surprised, he hadn’t startled at her violent display. He was quite safe behind the police glass after all. Overall Adachi seemed uninterested in her plight, which shouldn’t be much of a big surprise. After a moment he only shrugged his shoulders, head rolling back nonchalantly. He was toying with her, as he always did.

❝Even if I told you where I saw him, you’d never be able to find the place... Or him.❞ A smile lapsed like an eclipse over his face. ❝It’s been a few months after all, hasn’t it? Oho— did I touch a nerve?❞

Bitter resentment indeed tightened her lip and further slanted her petite brows, however the look in her eyes was something far worse. Defeat. Narukami-senpai had faced off against Adachi alone, mentioning to none of his friends his intentions to make such a traipse into the tv world. When the Investigation Team raced in after figuring it out, they could only find Adachi— their friend going up in a puff of smoke.

After his arrest they all pressed for time to speak with him, being the only lead they had. Rise herself had ventured back into the tv numerous times to attempt to find him, but not even Himiko could find even the tiniest trace of him. Days passed, then weeks, now...

Slowly her useless rage subsided, the fist she had balled up upon the reflective surface loosened and then fell away. She righted her chair and sat back down, raising her eyes to meet the other’s across from her. No one admitted to giving up the search, but one by one, it became to hard to keep hoping. She understood... but every day she returned. It wasn’t every day she could actually see him, but thanks to a few well placed lies and worked connection she was able to falsify her position as a distant relative. If Adachi ever wanted to stop her, he could, yet he said nothing.

❝I’ll make you a deal.❞ She offered. ❝I’m sure there’s something you want— to know or to possess. Tell me. I will get it for you. In exchange you have to tell me everything. You want a game, right? Fine. I’ll play.❞

“Don’t leave tonight”, “It’s dangerous”, “Uncle Dojima told me not to leave at such hours”, and many other thoughts like this invaded his head. Premonitions often work greatly to avoid unfortunate outcomes, but this night he was going against his own judgement, and actually went outside — making the less noise possible.

He could feel how the air was damp and ominous. It was really dark outside, and it was thanks to the moonlight that he was able to move in absolute silence through the town. He knew this was wrong, he knew and he was aware that something awful could happen anytime the more he moves around aimlessly, but he couldn’t help his need of ... finding something. A gut feeling telling him to investigate. He would’ve called his friends... but he didn’t want to involve them in something that could go from harmless to horrible in a second. If he had to pay for his carelessness, he would atone it alone.

The ominous feeling only grew stronger upon his arrival near the police station. It was usually full of agents, but tonight ... most of the lights inside were off, and he was no idiot — he knew something weird was happening inside.

And upon closer examination, he recognized someone’s face, near the side exit. It was Adachi, standing calmly next to it, his gun drawn. At this sight, he couldn’t help but approach him, against the best of his judgement. 

“—Adachi-san...?”

Initial ambivalence wavered in his voice, sought reassurance with his own words. Yu had been trying not to believe that he’s actually standing there for a bad reason, but that thought faltered as a brief, sardonic smile toyed with Adachi’s mouth as his own lips quivered.

Perhaps it would be for the best to leave, the feeling of escaping that gradually growing within him. – he’d taken note of his behavioral chance, and Adachi’s expression felt heavily upon him, as if he’d been burdened with the responsibility of taking care of him, when he couldn’t even take care of himself right now.

Every step in the tv world came back to you in several echoes, despite there being no walls to reflect the sound back. It made you wary, as if someone was following you. Almost every second step the girl would confirm this, head snapping back over her shoulder with a swing of warm curls. The fog obscured a fair amount of her vision, all slight of movement could easily be a fabrication of her mind… or not. She kept moving, sweat beading along her hairline, stomach clenching. Despite her best efforts, she couldn’t locate the rest of the Investigation Team. It was like she had no signal, despite how well she knew her friends. Once, for a brief moment, she felt the slightest inkling of what might have been Chie, but the link was snuffed out like a candle flame.

She paused, even thought she was only moving at a brisk walk her body felt heavy. She rested the bellies of her palms on her knees and swallowed several gulps of air. The fog offered no cool tinge to the air, it was neither warm nor hot, only heavy. The more she stayed here the sicker she felt. She wanted to get out of here- with everyone. Rising back to her feet Rise laced her fingers tight before her chest and reached deep down to draw Himiko forth. The persona came in a refreshing burst, like a breath of fresh air, clearing the clutter from her mind and offering momentary clarity. She spread out her mental feelers for anyone, anything, and found something. However, it wasn’t the friends she was searching for.

A black puddle rose like tar from the ground, and the creature born from that was a bizarre mixture of teeth and tongue. She was unable to contain the gasp that spilled out of her lips, taking an uneasy step back as the shadows manifested before her. Through Himiko she could see their weakness, pick apart their flaws, and yet she could do nothing to stand against them. Fear gnawed at her insides, blood rushing to her head. She saw the attack coming, but her body was frozen in place. When it’s body slammed into her the impact sent her tumbling back, and when the world stopped spinning it was as if she had to recall had to breath. Her persona vanished like a wisp of smoke, and she found herself feebly trying to get to her feet.

It was never like this before. With everyone at her side sometimes it felt like a game, a game they always won. She pointed out a weak spot and her friends cut them down, banishing the shadows like nightmares. Now it was like the first time she’d been thrust into the television all over again; alone, frightened, and worst of all, helpless. Her brain kept screaming ‘you can’t give up!’, but her muscles shook and refused to obey.

It was closing in again now, white gnashing teeth in an almost human grin bobbing in the air. It looked like it was laughing- perhaps it was. She had to get up. She had to at least try to run away. She had to find the others and they all would go home and talk about this together. Everyone would sit together in the Junes food court and figure out how to make sure they were never separated again. She believed it with all her heart. When her eyes rolled up it was suddenly almost on top of her, a strange shimmering saliva making repetitive ‘plip’s as the droplets splattered near her.

Was this the end…?

“Oh! Haha…” Adachi laughed nervously as he felt her little arms wrap around him and squeeze. He returned the gesture with a light pat on her head, making sure to hide his relief when she let go. “Of course you can! It’s yours, isn’t it?”

Taking care not to tear anything, she unraveled the wrappings around the box and carefully opened it. When she peered inside, it was incredibly hard to hide the sheer disappointment on her face. Nanako knew she wasn’t so supposed to act spoiled or anything of the sort, but why would he give her an empty box? Maybe the box was the gift? Fixing her face the best she can, to only resemble mild confusion, she looked back up to her uncle figure.
