All those people in those old photographs I've seen are dead* a.k.a. Pete Wentz and his heroes, #1
As anyone who knows me even a little bit might have guessed by now, I am kind of obsessed with Pete Wentz lol. But, like, especially obsessed with the famous people who I think he considered his role models while he was becoming famous himself. It’s always so interesting to me to see what kind of inspiration he’s surrounded himself with, Kerouac and Dylan probably being the most obvious – might do a longer post someday – then there’s Andy Warhol, etc. Anyway! Tonight’s topic – Johnny Cash.
(Johnny Cash is super famous, of course, one of those figures in popular culture that everyone kind of knows by default – but there were two things that I’m guessing put him on the map for young Pete: his cover of Nine Inch Nail’s Hurt, which came out in 2003 shortly before his death, and the 2005 biopic/romantic drama Walk the Line, where Cash is played by Joaquin Phoenix and his future wife, June Carter, by Reese Witherspoon.)
Johnny Cash had a pill problem, he once tried to kill himself, and he always dressed in black. (He also had a mutual admiration club thing going with Bob Dylan – they recorded each other’s songs and were big fans of each other’s work). We have the lyrics from Bob Dylan (the song), of course:
Would you bury me next to Johnny Cash? I'm obsessed
Do you love me like that? Yeah
The person who is actually buried next to him is in fact his wife June, who was a very famous musician in her own right – they met in 1956 (while they were both married to other people), performed and toured together for years, finally got married in 1968, and stayed that way until her death in May of 2003 (he died that September). One of his biggest hits, Ring of Fire, was written by June about falling in love with him (while he was still married).
In the top pic (x), which was presumably taken in Pete’s house, he has a framed picture of Johnny and June on the wall behind him (I can’t place the other picture, if anyone can, please let me know!).
Okay, guess I have indulged my fixation enough for one night. xo
* with apologies to Bob Dylan, who’s not dead – I couldn’t resist using that as a title.
