Hey! I am heading to Sweden this summer, and I wanted to know if Swedes are really as shy/unfriendly as they are made out to be. If I ask someone for directions on the street, will they tell me and be reasonably polite? Also, what's the availability of wifi like in Sweden? Are there internet cafes with free wifi and such? Thanks!
Hello! First of all congratulations on your trip to Sweden :), I hope you have a lot of fun!
- I will start with the internet one because Iâve already made a post about it, WiFi is available almost everywhere, click here for a detailed post about Internet in Sweden.Â
(BTW I forgot to mention the SL Busses which flyingbluebox  kindly reminded me)
- Swedes are naturally quiet and shy, I wouldnât say they are unfriendly but they definitely will not be up for small talk on the street or just casual conversation on the bus. But if you ask for directions they will be polite to direct you where you have to go, some are nicer than others but most of them will tell you the information youâre asking for.Â
Some people say that some swedes are just waiting to practice their english with you, and I will say that extends to other popular languages as well. Last time I was there the cashier at IKEA heard I spoke english and tried some small talk with me, which I thought was very nice. Also some other cashier at the convenience store heard my spanish and tried to talk to me in spanish.Â
Last but not least one of my best experiences happened last year when my uncle dropped me and my friend at the subway station but I left my phone in his car. I was trying to find a pay phone at the subway station and asked a lady that was there too, I told her what was going on and she said there werenât any pay phones there but then she offered her phone so I could contact my family. Even though she looked intimidating at first that simple gesture showed me how there is always people willing to help.
Hope this is helpful for you! :)
