The past few months, Nico had been on edge. Full of pent up energy from a lack of his usual activity. It made him tense, left on edge. Something he hadn’t felt in years.
What didn’t help was having to watch a group of recruits who didn’t know personal space.
It was innocent, really, just people who were curious about him. Though the talking over each other, the crowding, and how the air seemed to tighten, was getting to him.
Nico snapped at them. Particularly, one who was trying to look at his face up close. He didn’t mean it, no harm was truly done. Though he probably scared the recruits shitless.
He was separated almost immediately, being sent back to his barracks. Slamming his door on accident, bumping into his chair, and now sitting on his bed with his phone in shaky hands.

It’s never a surprise any time the recruits act up and, as a result, annoy someone. It’s really just a hobby of theirs at this point.
So Crow barely pays a group of them any mind when he walks past and overhears them whining about the consequences of their actions. He had better things to do than listen to them moan and groan over a superior that yelled at them or an exercise they had to do.
Except one of them mentioned someone who Crow was certain was Nico with the defensive tone they spoke in and the furrow of their brow, reeking irritation and a level of cluelessness that every recruit came with.
“I didn’t even do anything to the mutt. I didn’t know he’d get upset when I got close, I was just trying to look at him…”
Crow was turning in an instant, his own brows furrowed humourlessly. “What was that?” The words were spat with such real resentment that it had the recruits silent in an instant. Not truly bothered to scold them, not this time, Crow turned back around and walked past once more, heading in a direction he was fondly familiar with.
His phone was in his hands a couple steps later, a text to Nico already getting typed out.
[ how did looking after those youngins go? ]
[ are ya busy? ]
It was vague, but filled with enough intention that Crow figured Nico could tell he was already on the way to his room.
