56 with Michael? I know you'll do a great job with it. Love you babe.
56. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
You felt off all day. The anxious feeling creeping up your spine as soon as you woke up, letting you know that today was not going to be a fun day. Sometimes there were no reasons for it - it just happened, it was one of those days.
Michael hadn’t expected the scene he came home to after rehearsals. He was expecting the usual - you cooking dinner in the kitchen, singing along to whatever music was on the radio. Or sometimes he found you sat at your desk in your office, working on whatever essay you had to do, or doing other bits of general work. You always seemed to have an endless list of things to do every day - he admired your work ethic, and how determined you were to succeed.
You were his favourite person to come home to, the thought got him through the day. But today, was not like usual. He entered the house, the kitchen empty and quiet, no evidence of any cooking present. He couldn’t hear any music or TV, which was also not like you. There was always some form of noise in the house - it almost made him wonder whether you had gone out.
But as he made his way up the stairs, his heart clenched in his chest when he heard the faint sound of you sobbing. He had no idea what was wrong, and an anxious feeling flooded his own body as various bad situations flowed through his mind.
“Baby?” He called out, entering your shared bedroom, his eyes landing on you curled up in bed. More and more tears were steaming down your cheeks, your chest heaving with every breath which were getting heavier with every sob that passed your lips. “What’s the matter, sweetheart?”
You couldn’t form words, trying to focus on catching your breath more than anything. You didn’t resist as Michael took off his shoes and tucked himself into bed next to you, your body practically falling into his. His arms wrapped around you, one arm immediately started to rub your back, knowing that it would calm you down.
“Shh baby, shh.” He whispered softly, his heart breaking as you cried into his chest. His lips pressed a soft kiss to the crown of your head, pulling you towards his chest as his arms enveloped you completely. “I’ve got you, my love. Try to calm down, okay?”
He started to take deep breaths for you to copy, desperately trying to loosen your tight chest and breathe evenly again. Eventually it worked, your sobs reducing to soft tears spilling down your cheeks.
“Tell me what’s wrong, baby.” He pleaded with you softly, trying not to upset you further, but feeling increasingly panicked not knowing what was wrong. All he wanted was for you to be happy always, and seeing you like this, just broke his heart. “I can’t help if you don’t tell me what’s wrong.”Â
“Today has just been a lot.” You stated, still trying to breathe normally but feeling like your chest was constricted from sobbing. You curled more into his body, inhaling his familiar scent, knowing that it would ground you. “But it’s okay. I’m okay.”
“You definitely are not okay, baby. Coming home to you crying in bed in the middle of the afternoon is not okay.” He replied, gently grabbing your chin to make you look at him. “I’m here to help, okay? Don’t shut me out.”
“Thank you.” You whispered quietly, the two words holding more appreciation than Michael could ever know. You knew he was there for you, he always was - but hearing him say the words settled your heart.
“I love you, baby. Always.”
