Something within me stirred, when I saw the “Meet the Team” and “Expiration Date” videos for Team Fortress 2. I knew of the game beforehand, but never looked into it beyond its name. But one day, I found a Scout x Reader fanfiction and I felt... driven, to investigate closer.

In November 2014, I finally downloaded Team Fortress 2 onto the family laptop.

It was the very first time I had ever used Steam, and the very first FPS I would ever play. I was so nerve-wracked during the 8 hour download process, and studied as much as I could of my favourite character, Sniper, before playing. I started by finishing the Training, and then playing as Sniper on koth_viaduct on Easy mode with the bots. When I had racked up 63 hours, I finally mustered the courage to go online.

Of course, I felt scared, because I couldn’t really aim at a moving target well. So, I picked Medic.

It was such a rush, maining the German man. I got to be of use to my team, and I got to see the tides of battle change before my eyes once a competent Medic like myself jumped onto the server. It was amazing, and after years of playing on and off, I finally spread out to playing the other classes like Engineer, and more importantly, Sniper again.

I fell in love with Sniper during my sniping training, and still love the character now. As an Australian, I absolutely adore his voice, mannerisms, and the way he behaves in battle. He’s so professional, yet just as eccentric as the others. I’m proud such a cool Aussie like him is represented in the ridiculousness that is TF2.
