My first art competition!
This is a follow up to this post
So as we left off, doing commissions at the open market ended up with me being scouted for the competition to represent my high-school. There's 3 categories: descriptive art, zakhrafa (mandalas) and Arabic calligraphy. And that is true for middle school and elementary only has descriptive. I was chosen for high-school descriptive. They told me 3 days in advance, and gave me a heads up on how it'll go down.
Every year, for descriptive drawing, the judges always ask for movement. And they said that a race has never been done before, so I should try to do that. So I practiced perspective, dynamic poses and made lots of practice sketches.
The day of the competition (I got to skip my Arabic test :D) I was so nervous I just started drawing
My team consisted of 1 girl from elementary, two girls and one boy from middle school, me, my classmate and a boy from high-school. The two boys were in for calligraphy, and the teacher told us that the older boy was more experienced with competitions so if we ever need advice to ask him but to be careful because he's a nervous wreck at all times. Which I didn't see at first, cuz ngl, his face looked intimidating at first. Also he immediately started coaching the younger boy, and they just stuck together the whole thing.
We all got into the little bus and went to the location, but plot twist, although they said not to bring your own paper, THEY SAID WHY DIDNT YALL BRING YOUR OWN PAPER?! THE GALL?! That's libya for you. So we got some paper from the middle school girl. It was bad paper with a weird texture so ye we cooked.
We all got into the hall and I set up all the supplies I brought (I got this giant set of colored pencils from my friend Besho who gave it to me and told me to win. We stan Besho) I sat next to the elementary girl to help her with her art, and I coached her on anatomy for a bit. But that meant I was also siting next to the guys. But it is what it is.
High-school guy was really putting the nervous in nervous wreck and was just stimming like crazy, so I just also started stimming, and then we were just stimming in unison. Bonding. We didn't really talk much, but he would say something to me every once in a while like "do you use acrylics?" "Nah, colored pencils" "cool."
Then it started, and we had 3 hours. I immediately went at it, not focusing on anybody. The paper was crap but I won't let that stop me. There were a lot of chaperones going around, look at the art, and they would stop on people once in a while and compliment them, but no one stopped on me so I guess I'm losing yall. Every once in a while I would ask how much time left and I felt that I wouldn't be done in time, but I did. There were some girls from my level who made whole watercolor masterpieces so although they went against the judges wishes (they made scenery, no movement) I'm still nervous cuz the skill makes up for it.
After all was said and done, my teacher got us beef sandwiches and juice, and we sat and waited in the location's library, and you know your girl had to get a book, the one that caught my eye was Ad#lf H¡tler's diary, and I read it. Man, that guy was crazy. I'm glad he's dead.
Then we went home, and missed the entire school day. Yippee. It's been days, and there's still no results, cuz there's so many schools and it's gonna take a while. No regrets, had fun. Also the Arabic word on the moon means "Victory"
