#floodageddon

on friday night mom and i went out to see a band play at a local bar at about 9 pm. when we got back a little after midnight it was immediately obvious there was water in our house. the toilet in the hall bathroom broke and flooded first the bathroom, then all the adjoining rooms with water. there was about half an inch of water throughout all the bedrooms, our two hallways, and our living room, but it did not reach our kitchen.

we borrowed a shopvac from our next door neighbor and sucked up as much water as we could, talked with our insurance, and by the time they sent anyone out to clean up we had basically gotten as much standing water out as we could so they said they would come back in the next day to start work on ripping stuff up and everything. by the time this was all settled it was around 5:30. we went to bed, but i was up before 8 so i could take my dog to day care while work was done on our house. came back home and napped for a bit bringing my total amount to sleep at somewhere a little over 3 hours (i usually sleep around 9 if not more for reference so i am not used to that little sleep at all). i ended up deciding to just have her board there rather than picking her up in the evening because i felt like it would be less stress on her.

we spent the rest of the day clearing as much stuff out of the house and into the garage and moving furniture so that the workers could rip up all our wood floor and baseboards (some of the rooms had tile and that did not have to be ripped up so we only lost flooring in two rooms). the damage is widespread but not very bad according to the techs that did the work. we have fans and dehumidifiers set up and those will have to run for 3-5 days, after that the damage will be assessed.

in all of the chaos, one of the wires for our internet got cut accidentally so i am without internet at home and my phone is broken so it’s hard to use so i will not be online much quite possibly.

we do have insurance so we haven’t had to pay out of pocket, but we are not sure how much the insurance will cover because we don’t have very good insurance. the dog will have to be boarded for several days at minimum, possibly the entire time we are having work done to fix the damage which could be weeks apparently. we are staying at my aunt’s house but would prefer to go back home but that’s rlly dependent upon a lot of factors.

money is NOT an immediate concern since that will all be decided later and we are not having to pay anything upfront (plus mom has credit cards and i get paid on friday so we can make it work i think). however we will need new floors in two rooms, new baseboards in the majority of the house, will probably have high water and electric bills from the leak and the machines used to clean up the leak, and we have damaged personal items as well. there is also the cost of boarding the dog. i start a new position at work on monday so my paycheck in two weeks will be much more sizeable than the one this week, so instead of using my extra money on replacing my phone and getting new glasses i’m just going to save all the extra to help cover any costs we might have to pay. i’m also probably going to push back returning to school until the spring semester. the biggest concern (besides just the inconvenience/stress of it all) is just how much the insurance will cover vs what the actual cost ends up being. we could be fine and not have to worry about anything. we could end up needing to buy stuff with our own money (and then we’ll be screwed).
