Genre Documentary Directed by Roberta Grossman, Sophie Sartain Starring Gloria Allred Releases on 21 January 2018 Channel Netflix Seeing Allred is a 2018 documentary directed by Roberta Grossman and Sophie Sartain based on Women’s right’s attorney Gloria Allred. Gloria Allred has time and again appeared in the spotlight for being ‘controversial’, ‘too outspoken’ and is often considered too bold for a woman, especially during the time she began to build her career. The documentary uses archival footages, current footages as well as recorded interviews in order to piece a powerful, compelling and inspirational story of a woman, who has bravely fought for her rights and those of others and she has proved to be a force that should be reckoned with. The documentary is mostly an observational one wherein we see her avidly standing with women who have seen sexually assaulted by prominent figures mainly, Bill Cosby and Donald Trump. The women who were drugged, abused and assaulted by these men are brought to the forefront and urged to speak about their experiences. Unfortunately, they cannot file a case since it has been several years. However, they can speak about it, in order to spread awareness and most importantly highlight the fact that these men that people look up to, are indeed not worthy. Allred, is a staunch feminist which is obvious from her statements and her stands throughout her career. During her prime, she appeared in several talk shows and debates and spoke about women’s freedom and was laughed at by the men in the show, who considered it be to ludicrous. The documentary successfully highlights the biases that existed during that time period and how it is now. Allred, who herself was a a victim of rape; speaks about it openly, bravely and encourages that people speak about such issues more often. She rallies with women on women’s marches, stands with the LGBTQ community and openly supports drag queens. She is loved by so many people and yet shamed for being so ‘bold’. The documentary brings up very important points – ‘would she have faced any of this hate, if she were a man?’ ‘male privilege is being exploited and it causes great harm; when it should not have existed at all!’ and most importantly ‘how long will victims be ostracised, when they should be listened to and the men committing these heinous crimes should be rightfully punished!’ It is one of the greatest documentaries one could find on Netflix and should certainly be watched. Assault and rapes are issues that are beginning to gain importance and people have started talking about it. Hence, there is a need for everyone to be aware and educated about this problem. How to Get Over a Breakup is a movie who want something to just watch to pass the time.

An adaptation of a Venezuelan telenovela did not really feel like my scene, but boy was I wrong! Jane the Virgin feels like reality. It’s not overly fluffy, it doesn’t always work out the way you hoped it would for the characters and it certainly doesn’t gloss things over too much. It tells the truth about living on a mediocre salary, dipping a bit towards poverty, not becoming an overnight success, getting the jobs you might not want and so on. There’s something very palpable and I like that very much. The show starts off with Jane a young girl played by the hilarious Gina Rodriguez being lectured about virginity. At this point in the show, I was like what!? It’s the 21st century after all, why does it even matter? Jane’s grandmother, her ‘Abuela’, compares her virginity to a flower. Telling young Jane to crumple it and then attempt to make it perfect again. When Jane fails to do so, she promptly informs her that that’s, what happens when you lose your virginity. You will never be as pure again. Jane’s mum in the background says “really mom?” and we all laugh along to her eye-rolling at her mum’s lame antics. Fast forward to Jane, a 23-year old religious young Latina, who is still a virgin (thanks to her grandmum for that constant reminder) pursuing a college degree and working a part-time job. Here is where I started to fall in love with her character. She’s very passionate and a strong female lead. She wants to become a published writer. However, despite her best qualities, she’s also very plan oriented. Jane plans her life out, often down to minute details, sometimes forgetting to let loose and follow her heart. Now, things start to get interesting, Jane goes for a routine doctor’s appointment to the clinic and well, things get a little mixed up (big understatement). Dr. Alver caught her wife in bed with someone else the night before and is understandably shaken up the next morning when she’s at the clinic. She messed up her two appointments and accidentally inseminates Jane instead of another woman by accident. However, the colossal mistake doesn’t end there because the sperm she inseminated Jane with was her brother’s. Rafael Solano (also Jane’s former crush) is a cancer survivor and that was his only sperm a.k.a. his only shot at having a child. Dr. Alver hopes that the pregnancy doesn’t take, which it eventually does much to her dismay. Jane finds out when she faints on a bus, and thus the drama begins. I forgot to mention that the reason for the artificial insemination being on the doc’s list in the first place was because of Rafael’s scheming wife. The woman needed to get pregnant for she was afraid he was gonna divorce her and leaving her without the prenup money. When Rafael finds out, he’s understandably furious. He really wants to have a child and asks Jane to keep the baby. Over the course of the show, he and Jane even begin to develop mutual feelings. Also, did I say that Rafael’s wife is cheating on him with his best friend? Clearly, there’s a lot going on in the show. You will never be bored again! One thing, that stands out about the show is its diversity. The abundance of different colors, communities and so on. You have your Latina community, the LGBTQ+ community, etc. Everyone has customs and traditions. Jane the Virgin is brave in its ability to portray all these cultures in such difficult times. There’s something for everyone, though it might feel a bit strange at first. But its quirkiness will eventually draw you in, for sure. Video credit – Youtube

Season one starts the magical, adventurous journey of Once Upon a time. In this season we are introduced to the show’s world and in the first few episodes we learn how all the fairytale characters have ended up in a small town in Maine, Storybrooke. Each episode has two parallel storylines – one that is the present in Storybrooke, the other is the past in the Enchanted forest. The past stories do not follow a chronological order and we see them unfolding based on the events of the present timeline. One by one we see who the people of Storybrooke really are. Their stories are shown in depth and plotted together in the overarching storyline so well that we are easily able to place the pieces of the past storyline together and understand the events leading up to the present. We have a lot of familiar names, not just from Disney, but even the old fairy tales that we’ve read and know about. In this season we have Snow White, Prince Charming, The Evil queen (Regina), Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin, Belle, the seven dwarfs, Red Riding Hood, Mad Hatter and many more. The season revolves around the existence of the Dark Curse that was enacted by the Evil queen, which resulted in all the fairytale characters being transported from the fairy tale world to our world which they call ‘the land without magic’. In this world, 30 years have passed by and these characters are all frozen in time until the arrival of Emma, who is supposed to be the saviour. All the characters have forgotten their real lives and live with memories that were created by the Evil queen for the purpose of the curse. She enacted this curse to fulfil her thirst for vengeance against Snow White. Henry, who is Emma’s birth son, but Regina’s adopted son brings Emma into the town in order to break the curse and give back everyone their memories. This season is focused on Emma and the fact that she needs to believe in fairytales and magic, and until she does so the curse cannot be broken. Throughout, Henry struggles to make her believe, while Emma thinks it is all his delusion. While on one hand, Henry is battling with Emma’s belief, Regina is persistent on getting Emma to leave the town because she sees her as a threat, since Henry loves Emma and does not feel the same way about Regina. Emma, equally as persistent as Regina, decides to stay and look out for Henry. What starts off as a short one week vacation in town, eventually becomes a long-term decision as she worries about Henry and how he is being treated. At the same time, she becomes friends with Mary Margaret, who happens to be Snow White. The season sets up the basis for following 6 seasons and is one of the best seasons of the entire show. The events and the overarching storyline are carefully planned and it is indeed, impressive. This season is definitely worth a watch and it will change the way you look at fairy tales, most certainly in a good way! Video Credit – ABC | Youtube
