I always envied boys who'd run their fingers through a naked flame as coolly as I'd stroke a cat. I never knew the trick of pinching out a wick or saw them lick the tips of forefingers behind my back. I felt the sting of black red heat upon my skin, the burning crumb of ash, it's smoky ring imprinted on my thumb; still see the cackles on their lips.
