So thankfully I already have an answer for this! I hope my explanations for these songs make sense tho - for characters I usually go for songs that have a general sound and create a particular atmosphere I want, so the lyrics might not all be applicable (apart from a few choice lines).
Tobias Lavellan: Monsters - Hurricane Bells
āThe monsters are buried down deep inside, youāll never know when theyāre satisfied.ā
I think this speaks to Tobyās anxiety, here represented by the monsters. She tries to bury all her anxieties deep inside, but they usually emerge in fierce acts of violence, hence āyou never know when theyāre satisfiedā. Tobyās rage in battle comes from fear - she is desperate to remove the current threat and it creates a kind of bloodlust - like she wants to violently tear fear out of her world. Just hack at it until it finally ends.
The first time Toby felt this way was when the Lavellan clan was ambushed by slavers in the middle of the night. Toby was only 11 at the time. A slaver tore into the tent Toby shared with her mother, wrenched Delva from her bedroll by the hair and beat her. Toby sprung to her feet, grabbed the carving knife her mother used to whittle the huntersā bows and stabbed in the man until he lay a bloody mess on the floor. For the briefest moment Delva looked at her daughter with more fear than she did the slaver.
Since then Toby has tried to suppress her inner bloodlust. Kya, on the other hand, embraces it.
Kya Trevelyan: Yellow Flicker Beat - Lorde
āI got my fingers laced together and I made a little prison and Iām locking up everyone who ever laid a finger on me.ā
While Toby tries to douse the raging flames of vengeance within her, Kya stokes the fire and sets it ablaze. She is angry and she is fucking coming for you.
sexy Hawke: Feel It Still - Portugal. The Man
āIām a rebel just for kicks now.ā
So for this song, I imagine it being specific to sexy Hawke in my (eventual) Viscount Election AU story.
The story begins a year after Hawke was titled the Champion of Kirkwall. Life is good, and after the Arishok everyone feels like their toughest of battles are over.
But that doesnāt fly with sexy Hawke. Meredith is back on her bullshit and itās getting even worse, so Hawke decides to make the shock announcement that sheās running for Viscount. Her friends thought their campaigning days were over, but Hawke feels it still.
This song coming in just as Hawkeās campaign really gets going. Imagine a montage of election billboards, the gang out doorknocking and fundraising, and Hawkeās twin Ross working frantically as the campaign manager and issuing orders to everyone. I always play this song when I try to write the goddamn story, which I hope will actually exist someday!
