Happy #Arachtober, everyone! This week's #amazingArachnid is Dwayne Johnson, my Flat Rock Scorpion! Dwayne is one of the largest scorpions in the world, and quite shy, despite his looks and namesake. These scorpions hide in narrow crevices between rocks, and ambush prey as they pass by. And yes, scorpions are arachnids - just like spiders, they have 8 walking legs, 2 pedipalps, and chelicerae! . Unlike spiders, scorpion's #chelicerae aren't fangs - instead they are tiny little pincers (like a thumb and forefinger) that are great for mashing up food. You can see them a bit in the 2nd picture. From looking at Dwaynes huge claws (those are modified #pedipalps, btw), you can tell that he's evolved to use physical strength to catch food, and not his stinger - this pattern holds for most scorpions, and makes it easy to tell whether you need to worry about a scorpion's venom.
