flatlands

we are a tornado's path, a gateway to both the sway of thick grass fields and a sudden flattening. there is nothing here to protect volatile bones, to keep out the roaming predators. we are hothouse sparks, the glow of a dying star through blind slats. we traverse endless highway loops, write our names in dashboard dust. the sound of pistols fire into dead air, the arid dirt holds our last vows, warped over a boulder in river water, our swollen feet try to outrun drought.
