The inventor read the headlines of a monster stalking the streets and knew he needed to do something about them. He read every report he could find, separated the most likely accounts from the sensationalist chaff, and noted the time and location of the incidents. He plotted them out on a map and despaired. He designed weapons and countermeasures to bring it down, working tirelessly as the occurrences escalated. He went to his brother’s laboratory in the epicenter of the incidents and waited. He had gone too far in his experiments. He would save him and the city as well.

Every year the town burned a scarecrow, and she hated the tradition. A local artist constructed one each spring, and it stood for months near the town’s welcome sign, only to be cruelly burned at the end of the year. But when she was selected to build that year’s scarecrow, she couldn’t say 'no.' She tried to explain why the tradition horrified her but couldn’t find the words. Instead, she filled her scarecrow with cunningly hidden wildflower seeds. Her creation burst with life all through the spring and summer. When autumn came, they didn’t have the heart to burn her.

From a young age, he knew there was another hidden world. He could see it reflected in puddles and from behind mirrors. Adults told him to stop being silly and explained that he only saw his reflection. But he knew that they were wrong. What he saw didn't quite match up to what they did. He stopped telling people and practiced keeping perfectly still so that his reflection stayed synced. Eventually, he grew up and forgot about the other world he had seen. It slipped away from him. Until one day, he reached out, and his reflection pulled him across.

The duke’s men had entered the palace. We fought them hand-to-hand with flashing blades and single-shot pistols, our organized lines dissolving into a chaotic melee through the corridors and ballrooms. I had no love for the king, but the duke was no more palatable. I'd sworn oaths, and I would uphold them. But as the day wore on, I watched good men die. I killed good men. For what? The vanity of a throne? A title? Their bodies lay among the smashed marbles and torn tapestries, and I swore a new oath. Whoever won would have to deal with me.

The power of his shots was unrivaled, breaking distance records and stunning audiences with the power of his swings. But he was banned from the professional circuit. A fan favorite, a debate raged across the sports world about what to do. But for as powerful as he was, he lacked finesse, which is what led to his downfall. The greenskeepers aligned to remove him from the sport, to prevent the scorched holes and craters he left in the rough and on the green.

The flower grew in the heart of an abandoned temple. He swore he would bring it to her as a token of his love. He fought his way through the ruins until he came upon the nave. A shaft of warm sunlight spilled through a broken window, illuminating an overgrown altar where a single white blossom grew. He carefully plucked it and brought it back for his lady. She sniffed it delicately, and bade him sit while she made him tea. In the kitchen, she poured the last of the old poison into the pot, glad to have fresh ingredients.
