He didn’t know how, he didn’t know when, but the Doctor knew that eventually, he and his TARDIS would have to reintegrate into the timeline. They would merge with the joyous, apparently well-adjusted, versions of themselves because this current side quest is how they got so well-adjusted in the first place. But all this standing still had made him sentimental. He didn’t want to leave his family with nothing, and so, the Doctor decided to plant a tree.
He was tempted to plant something bold and blue and memorable, but as there was no such tree native to Earth’s ecosystem, it could really cause problems in the long run. So he settled for an ordinary British tree that could thrive for decades. (Of course, it did still bloom quite impressive flowers in the spring.)
He planted it right where the TARDIS stood, locking the sapling away in a secret pocket of space-time where it could grow without being noticed until he left for good. He tended to it in secret because he couldn’t bear to tell any of them he was preparing to leave. Especially not Donna. Especially not Rose.
Still, Donna knew him so well that she was not at all surprised one morning when she found a tree in the place where the TARDIS had been for so many years. A note was tied around the trunk with a blue satin ribbon:
Sorry there wasn’t time for a proper goodbye. Something to remember me by, this time. I’ll never forget you. Thanks for everything. Love, Me.
It was a nice gesture, but Donna scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Always so dramatic!”
The face she knew might be gone, but she would always recognize the Doctor if she saw him.
And she was certain she would see him again.
