The most recent The Art Assignment is to make a sculpture representing embarrassment. Before having a baby a thought I might be embarrassed about breastfeeding, but I never really have been. What I do find embarrassing or uncomfortable is the paraphernalia for expressing and bottle feeding: plastic nipples, breastpumps, ugly nursing bras (which I’ve long since replaced thank God). There are not many people I would feel uncomfortable nursing in front of, but few I would allow see me pump. I suppose without the baby it all becomes so clinical, thoughts turn to machines and bodily fluids instead of natural care and nourishment.
