THE PATH TO THE INN WAS ALL TOO FAMILIAR. elena felt as if she was following her past self’s footsteps to the dark destrier inn , though her time spent in esker’s employment had not been plagued by disease. she clutched a handkerchief close to her mouth , wincing every time a cough echoed across the otherwise empty street. she had never seen the center aisle in such a state , it was jarring to say the least. like many she was sure , elena preferred the crowded and booming marketplace to the deserted ghost town.
a sigh of relief passed her lips when she closed in on the inn. quickly , she crossed into its threshold without a second glance to the morbid landscape behind her. just stepping in , she felt a weight lift from her shoulders ; the inn , like many of the places she used to frequent as a young performer , felt safe and comforting.
it didn’t take long to spot esker behind the bar. elena bounded across the space towards him wearing a puckish grin. she was no longer the girl who spied for the innkeeper but she found it hard to stay away from the place she had spent much of her first year away from acacia in. she rarely allowed herself sentimentality ; the dark destrier inn was almost always the exception.
“ esker! ” elena shouted in greeting. there was a brief flash of genuine excitement in her smile before her well trained performer’s smirk replaced it again. “ have you missed me terribly? ”
