"Cultural America" Mixed Media Alex Brady @alexbrahh After discovering people throwing away sun rotted American flags, I also found that people just had flags laying around their garages. These flags were not being hung high on a flag pole or folded in one of those nice glass shadow boxes. These flags are what I declare as retired flags. These retired flags were rejected flags that I felt had the right to be altered and fabricated. I started my alterations exploring scrap fabrics and used military gear. The different fabrics I discovered a relation with specific cultures. While fabricating each flag to correlate with a specific culture, I found that it truly represented my America. The America where it's okay to be proud of your heritage, but where it's more importantly a place to be proud to be an American. Which I think is an ideology that has been dusted away. There are many countries and loyal people who deserve freedom more than myself. We have been spoiled with freedoms that we aren't aware of. Personally, my grandma immigrated from Ireland to Ellis Island around 1936. Escaping poverty and hunger are things my generation in America have never experienced. My last name is Brady, I can drink lots of beer, and I have bright red hair. I am so proud to be Irish, but I am more proud to live in a country that allows me not to worry for my freedoms. For me it isn't about, "Who's flag is it?" These are all American flags. The flags are about the history between the cultures and time. What do specific cultures mean to your generation? Does this offend you? I am sure writing "home of the brave" in Arabic on an American flag will offend some. Along with the quotes, "love", "peace", "one nation", "think of others", "fear nothing" etc. These flags are stitched and altered exactly how America is. As the viewer, you can tell what areas are being represented simultaneously as you see an American flag. More striking, these flags tell culture and heritage, but also represents our patriotism. These flags are not to disrespect, but to bring forward that this is our America: Native American, Irish American, Asian American, Middle Eastern- American, Australian American, African American, Cuban American, etc. We make up the worth and what a flag represents. By reconstructing each flag, I hope to express the worth of other cultures that have been taken advantaged of. America is a country of freedom, respect, and honor and I believe anyone willing to have those aspects as an American deserves to call themselves American no matter what background.
