External fixator and puppy
December 2018!
The bone still isn’t healing properly but we’ve started hydrotherapy to try and work different muscles I can’t do on land
The water feels amazing, the doctors have cleared me to shower but getting up and into the bath is difficult so we’ve improvised and wash my hair over the bath and then I sit on the dining room chair and swing my legs over the bath and hose them down that way.
TIP 3 - if you’re finding it hard to shower just make sure you wash/soak your feet often, I know i struggled for a while but found a cheap washing up bowl and soaked my foot in that and got my sister / parents to scrub it off. (don’t soak pin sites) another good tip is getting a cotton bud and rubbing it between the toes to get excess skin off ☺️
In physio, my therapist stood with me for a good half an hour willing me to take a step without any aids, it’s like my body wanted to but my mind wasn’t allowing it. as soon as I did the one step, step two and three came easier. After this session I was instructed to only use one crutch!
Returning to physio the next week I decided that one crutch wasn’t working for me and I wanted to get rid of it. so I did and started walking with no crutches ☺️☺️👏
It was only after this session that I actually managed to walk up the stairs. Before that I was going up and down on my bottom 😂
I had a one to one physio session between Christmas and new year where we really worked on strengthening the muscles and loss of muscle since the frame.
Occupation Therapy is also a big part of recovery, the goal setting we do every week is really inspiring me to push on with progress and get back to who I was before the frame
Fibular Hemimalia at About 1 Month Old Boy

Fibular Hemimalia at About 1 Month Old Boy
I am writing on behalf of my son Nicholas. He is 5 years old and was diagnosed with Fibular Hemimelia at about 1 month old. We decided to have his leg lengthened and his ankle reconstructed at the ICLL because of their experience in treating fibular hemimelia and the confidence in the doctors that my son would live a full and active life without limitations. We understood that to most doctors amputation is the standard treatment for a case like Nicholas and for some children that may be the right choice but that was not what we felt was best for our boy. Nicholas is currently in a fixator for the second time and he is doing great. His first surgery was at 18 months old. Before his first surgery, we were very scared of what it would be like for him: would it affect his sparkling personality, would he be in constant pain? Our fears never came to pass. With both surgeries, Nicholas was off pain medication within weeks and walking and running and dancing and the same sweet, strong and happy boy he was before surgery. When Nicholas is asked about his fixator, he usually says something like this: “Dr. Standard put my fixator on to make my leg grow. He is awesome.” Nicholas loves Dr. Standard, and we feel so grateful to have him treating our son. We trust him 100% with our boy and we know that he cares so very much about the lives of all the children he treats. This is a challenging process, but there is a lot of support at the Rubin Institute. I do not think there is any place like it in the world, and we could not imagine taking our son anywhere else.

Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou.
