The story of Valery Brumel remains one of the most inspiring chapters in the history of limb reconstruction.
🥇 Olympic Silver Medalist – 1960 Summer Olympics 🥇 Olympic Gold Medalist – 1964 Summer Olympics 🏆 World Record High Jump – 2.28 meters (7 ft 6 in)
At the peak of his career, Brumel sustained a devastating open fracture of the tibia. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, the outcome was an infected non-union with limb shortening.
At a time when amputation seemed inevitable and his athletic career was considered over, he was referred to Prof. Gavriil Ilizarov in Kurgan in 1967.
✨ What followed changed the course of limb reconstruction forever.
Ilizarov salvaged the limb, restored function, and Brumel remarkably returned to competitive sport — achieving a jump of 2.06 meters (6 ft 9 in).
This single case brought international recognition to the Ilizarov method and marked a turning point in biological limb reconstruction.
