Warning: mention of the word “abortion”

“Hey,” he greeted softly, wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her forehead. “I missed you today.”
Nicole forced a smile, but her hands trembled. She stepped out of his embrace, putting space between them.
He froze, his brow furrowing. “What’s wrong?”
She swallowed, trying to steady her voice. “I’m pregnant.”
For a moment, Fitz just stared, his face blank as he processed the words. Then his expression softened, his eyes lighting up with the smallest hint of joy. “We’re having a baby?” Nicole shook her head, feeling her throat tighten. “No, Fitz. I’m not keeping it.”
The air in the room shifted. Fitz blinked, his expression falling from excitement to disbelief. “What?” His voice was low, almost a whisper. “I’m getting an abortion,” Nicole said, her words firm but her heart aching. Fitz’s face twisted, and he took a step toward her, his calm exterior cracking. “You’re not keeping our baby? Nicole, what are you talking about?”
Her voice wavered, but she held her ground. “I can’t do this, Fitz. Not now. Not with everything going on.” He stared at her like he didn’t recognize her, his eyes narrowing. “You’ve made this decision without me? Without even talking to me?” Nicole felt the walls closing in, but she kept her tone steady. “This is my body, Fitz. I’m not ready for this, and I don’t want to bring a child into this situation.”
Fitz’s expression darkened, his anger bubbling beneath the surface. “You don’t get to decide that alone, Nicole! This is our child! I’m the President of the United States, and you’re telling me I don’t have a say?” Her eyes flashed with frustration. “It’s not just about you being president, Fitz! This isn’t the life I imagined for myself, not right now!”
Fitz’s voice rose, cutting through the tension like a blade. “So you’re just going to get rid of our baby? Just like that?” Nicole’s voice cracked as she spoke, tears welling up in her eyes. “I’m trying to protect myself, Fitz. I can’t raise a child in this chaos. Your life is under a microscope, we’re barely keeping things together as it is.” Fitz stepped closer, his face inches from hers, his voice low and full of anger. “You don’t get to take this from me. I’ve lost enough already, and now you’re telling me I’m losing my child, too?”
Nicole shook her head, fighting back the tears. “I’m sorry, Fitz. But this is my decision. I need to do what’s right for me.” He backed away, his face a mix of rage and devastation. He turned and slammed his hand against the desk, rattling everything on it. “You can’t do this, Nicole! I won’t let you!” Nicole flinched but stood her ground, her voice barely above a whisper. “It’s already done. I’m not changing my mind.”
Fitz turned to her, his face full of betrayal, his breathing heavy. “You don’t care what this does to me, do you? To us?” Tears slid down Nicole’s cheeks, but she shook her head. “This isn’t about us anymore, Fitz. It’s about me, and I can’t… I won’t do this.” Fitz looked at her, his expression broken, before turning away in silence, leaving Nicole standing there, shattered but resolute. The distance between them had never felt so wide.
“I don’t wanna end up like Amanda Tanner, Fitz,” Nicole said, her voice low but laced with fear. Fitz’s eyes widened in shock. “Nicole, it wasn’t—” he began, but Nicole cut him off, her emotions spilling over.
“It wasn’t yours, I know that,” she said, her voice trembling. “But we both know this baby is yours.”Fitz’s jaw clenched, the room suddenly feeling smaller. “This is different,” he insisted, stepping closer to her, his tone softening. “You’re not Amanda. I would never let anything happen to you.”
“But it could, Fitz. I see how things spiral, how people around you get pulled into the chaos,” Nicole replied, her voice steady but thick with emotion. “That scandal nearly destroyed you—and her. What’s stopping this from becoming just another scandal? Another mess you have to clean up?” Fitz stared at her, his heart sinking as he realized what she was saying. He reached out, gently cupping her face, his voice almost pleading. “This is us, Nicole. This is real. I love you, and this baby… it’s a part of that.” Nicole’s eyes softened, but she still shook her head, tears welling up. “I can’t bring a child into this. Into a life of secrets, scandals, and cover-ups. I don’t want our baby to be a pawn in your world, constantly in danger because of who their father is.”
Fitz’s grip tightened slightly, his desperation growing. “You don’t have to be afraid. I’ll protect you both.” Nicole closed her eyes, shaking her head slowly. “It’s not about protection, Fitz. It’s about peace. I don’t want to be another name in the headlines. I don’t want our child to grow up in a storm that never ends.” Fitz’s face twisted in frustration and heartbreak. “So what? You’re just gonna walk away from us? From me?”
Nicole opened her eyes, locking them with his. “I’m walking away from a life I can’t live. I’m sorry, Fitz, but I won’t lose myself like Amanda did. And I won’t risk my child’s future in a world like this. Fitz’s hand dropped from her face, his expression hardening, but the pain was evident in his eyes. “You don’t have to do this, Nicole. We can make this work.” Nicole stepped back, her decision firm despite the love and pain between them. “No, Fitz. I can’t.” She turned and walked away, leaving Fitz standing alone, shattered by the weight of what he was losing.
