the thing about dnd nerds is that they will get excited to meet ANY parameter. See: how fast the players of On A Buss go from “what fucking system is this” to “I GOT A SIX!”

Something that speaks to me on such a personal level about the story of Clair Obscur is the dangers of using your own created fantasies to cope with grief, to avoid the pain of reality. For the majority of my life I’ve struggled with maladaptive daydreaming, using my own imagination to escape the sorrows I struggled with in real life. Loneliness, loss, broken relationships with family. To see a game portray this in such a visceral and accurate way cuts me so deeply. The more you delve into your own fabricated fiction, the more you have to indulge in order to maintain the sense of relief that it offers. Maelle’s ending is such a perfect portrayal of this. Outside of the game being a tragic and engaging piece of media, I do also think that it serves as a warning to creatives to not lose yourself within that which you create. Even with the hardships and trials of reality, there is still a life worth living for, no matter how seemingly disappointing it may be.
