When I first moved to OB, I noticed a predator often perched on the street lights on the bridges over the San Diego river. Although they had begun to return to the county in large numbers and were undoubtedly different individuals I dubbed them all the name Churchill and would report to my parents on every sighting. When we got to Tampa on our trip I was of course excited when I began to notice Churchill’s Eastern cousins perched on the many bridges in the area. I’ve loved spotting them as we traveled along the east coast and especially while we were in Jupiter, FL and I saw one nail a fish about 20’ from me on the beach. So you can imagine my excitement the other day when we were crossing on the ferry and I noticed a couple of them guarding their chicks on the pilings just a couple of feet from the side of the ship. I was hoping to get some better shots, but we ended up going different route and didn’t get another chance to observe them. Here is the best close up I was able to capture.
