7.  Pretending to be married

Yes yes yes yes yes please. I basically view this as a subset of “undercover as gay” (though, uh, I guess you could write this with straight people? though I don’t think I’d be into it then) and I am definitely here for undercover gay fic -- look, basically almost the first fanfic I wrote was 90,000 words of Bodie and Doyle being undercover as a couple on a cruise ship. So, uh, yeah.

I mean, I also have a story where Bodie and Doyle specifically pretend to be married that I wrote for carminapossunt because it’s her FAAAAVORITE. That one’s much shorter.

No, I’m not sure why it has to be Bodie and Doyle either.

12. Mind control

Never written it but am absolutely so here for it (to a degree that embarrasses me) in fic, with the proviso that whatever they’re being mind-controlled to do (have sex, come on, would you mind control them to do anything else?) has to be something that they secretly wanted anyway (even if it was only some small part of them and they didn’t consciously know before) but could never bring themselves to act on. Yeah. And then all the angst.

...actually it just occurred to me that maybe this is why I am enjoying reading SIM. I mean, I know that it isn’t actually mind control and we’re supposed to believe it’s the “real” Tony but for me it’s hitting a lot of the same dub-con narrative buttons -- like, the inversion is making Tony act on desires he would have refused to act on (say, drinking). And then of course he builds awful weapons and does appalling things that I don’t think he secretly would have wanted to do and I am not so much here for those parts, but making him give into his actual desires? Especially the ones that are bad ideas? I am enjoying that. Yyyeah. *hangs head*

I mean, I think my massive soulmate identity porn story is your prompt in reverse, where Steve is dating Iron Man and everyone else is like “what the fuck, Tony, stop mooning over Steve, he’s taken.” But clearly it would be awesome both ways.

It was really annoying once I noticed it, actually! I kept comparing it to the first Avengers movie, every time it reminded me of it. I mean, they get the avengers. Villain has a divide-and-conquer strategy. Avengers fight and then there’s an inspiring speech, and then there’s a final fight. Someone people like gets killed off. The villain is defeated surprisingly easily, and the Hulk gets him. The Avengers split and go off their own ways with music in the background after the big fight. Even the stinger was similar!

(Although it wasn't the only thing that annoyed me about the movie, or even the thing that annoyed me the most.)

well, you’re not wrong on that count; according to the tie-in comic, everything between hulk’s blowup at culver (near the v. beginning) and the end happens the same week as im2, but i hate the tie-in comics and don’t consider them canon, so

Not a sociolinguist, but here goes! It’s not that they’re bad, exactly -- most of them are straight out of a dialect survey (that has clearly been hijacked by Tumblr users at the end of the wordlist), but it’s more like that this is not a good way to actually elicit this data if you want to find out what accent someone has.

If you give someone a list of words, you are going to get most likely a very formal pronunciation (”citation form”), which might vary from how they say the words in everyday speech, which is actually what you’re looking at. Like, people who do not otherwise say a “t” in “often” might do it. That kind of thing. Also you get a specific intonation with lists, which can screw up word or phrasal stress. What you actually want to do is get someone to use the words you’re interested in naturally in a sentence. (There’s a famous William Labov study where he went to different NYC department stores of various degrees of, uh, ritziness, and he asked the salespeople for things he knew were on the fourth floor, and then he pretended not to hear the answer, so he could elicit each person saying “fourth floor” twice, and thereby determine when/whether these people said [r] in those words.)

So you don’t just say “what do you call gym shoes?” because that biases you toward getting “gym shoes” as an answer (and you might get people who have never heard the phrase “gym shoes”) -- you describe the shoes, or show a picture.

Also some of the words the list is asking for only make sense in pairs -- you ask  for “caught” because you want to find out about the cot/caught merger (i.e., do you say those two words the same or differently?), which is a thing in a lot of the US has (typically, the western US has the merger and the eastern US doesn’t, with some local dialect exceptions), and for that you really also need “cot.” It’s missing a few other mergers/splits, like merry/marry/Mary (this is one I absolutely cannot distinguish) and voiceless [w] as a phoneme (like witch/which or Wales/whales). And the whole thing is obviously very American (I mean, it was a US dialect survey) which is why it’s not asking about things like Canadian Raising or, I don’t know, the trap/bath split.
