(Davi goes to a first fandom convention ever vent) Reddit aita-but-not meme post version!
"hey are my friends the assholes for leaving me alone at a convention after I:
1) fucked off from the group from the very beginning of the convention two days in a row (and then the later days too) despite me knowing one of them was in a wheelchair and couldn't keep pace, and that some of my friends would have to stay behind to help them. I just had vendors I wanted to go to and they were moving at the pace of the slowest person :/
2) skipped the afternoon panel we were all supposed to meet up at on the second day because I lost track of time, which they all went to and attended Without Me. Like yeah we were all supposed to go to this one, but time just got away from me.
3) got upset that nobody else turned up to a cosplay meetup directly after the panel I missed, at the end of the day, when the two of my friends who are also disabled were getting severely overstimulated and couldn't handle the noise anymore (and informed everyone in our grouptext four minutes before the cosplay meetup started that they were outside getting air, which was only about 5 minutes away from where I was.Apparently they also talked about this while they were at the panel I missed? Ugh)
4) blamed everyone for not communicating with me and leaving me alone despite acknowledging that i had a phone service outage for at least a few hours that day and couldn't receive any of their messages. Which were communicating plans and locations.
5) never made an effort to ask where on the vendor floor the group was so I could then find, walk, and talk with them after I'd gone off to buy what I wanted or visit the panels I wanted to visit.
And 6) gave everyone the silent treatment and single-word answers, including the person paying for my hotel room and food, after the missed cosplay meetup (and I got told by one of them not to blame them for not communicating when they had been and I just hadn't been paying attention or receiving the messages) until we all left to go home? It was only 48 hours of complete silent treatment, the friend who was rooming with me surely has dealt with worse.
EDIT: no, none of them had trouble meeting back up with each other after *they* would split up, we had both a text and discord groupchat they were using to say where they were. It was only me. I didn't really ask where they were ever though, not until the cosplay meetup.
2nd Edit: no, I wasn't included in any of their conversations going forward, even though I rejected at least two invites from them to do stuff after they missed the cosplay panel, and they discussed plans for the third day right in front of me where I could hear and join in on their conversation, and some of these plans were even reiterated in the groupchat I was in. But I was Obviously giving them the silent treatment then, so that means I was being purposefully excluded because i couldn't talk back
3rd edit: I mean yes, I also change plans for what I'm doing during the convention based on what's healthiest for me. and I also changed our plans for my own sake at least twice in the first two days. But we talked about going to that cosplay meet-up earlier that morning and I didn't go find them again after I left them while they were looking at a vendor. And they didn't know I didn't have phone service for a while. They still could have communicated using smoke signals or something, this is clearly their fault and they wanted me to be alone?
4th edit: i mean yeah i preemptively blocked them on every social media immediately after we all went home because they clearly left ME because they didn't ever come find me- yes I know one of them is in a wheelchair and one of them was pushing the chair and the third has a lot of sensory sensitivities but clearly the fourth person should have split away from the group to hang out with me instead of expecting me to go find the less-mobile group sometimes to spend time with them?
5th edit: i mean yeah i MIGHT have felt less alone if I'd stuck with the group or tried to visit vendors with them sometimes, but they should have been able to come with ME instead. The other two disabled people in the group should have figured it out somehow they're not my responsibility?"
And now Memeing aside. This is a direct vent post! This is about a person who genuinely did all of these things this weekend at the first convention I went to! I'm only leaving the person's name out b/c tumblr Fucking Sucks if names are included. (Trolls are dicks)
Like, I genuinely enjoyed their company until they tried to say we, as a group, left *them* and didn't communicate with them. Like hello??? The other four of us didn't have an issue communicating or sticking together. They could have at ANY point texted the group at any point on anybday for our location so they could find us and come walk the con floor with us for like. fifteen minutes, if they wanted to spend time with us. Or asked us to go visit a specific vendor with them. Or even asked us to try and make the cosplay meetup if it was important to them, instead of making a passive-aggressive snide comment! Because as far as *I* was fucking tracking it was exactly the same thing as the cosplay meetup we had on the friday schedule and all skipped for the exact same reason, and the previous panels and events we skipped for the *exact same reasons*. But no, they torpedoed friendships with four people simultaneously over this. What, were we supposed to read their mind or chase them down in order to hang out with them? The group was 3/5ths disabled folks and we were going at a pace we all could handle even if it meant we didn't get to do everything we wanted. If they wanted to go faster that's fine, but that means they'd HAVE to go solo.
The only mildly funny part about ALL of this is that Literally NONE of us had an issue with them wanting to do their own thing, either. Except that we all felt like they point-blank didn't want to hang out with us, because they'd leave us in the artist alley/vendor crowds without a single word and then just. Wouldn't turn up until there was a panel they wanted to go to later that we *also* wanted to be at! We (or I personally, rather) just didn't bring this up to them, because it was entirely their right to go experience the convention the way they wanted to? We just weren't going to go with.
Oh and if they're reading this; yeah, this is about you. I hope you got what you wanted out of the convention. Literally at any point an apology for blowing things out of proportion could've fixed everything. 3/5ths of the group is also adhd and deals with rsd and etc. We'd have worked it out. But I'm also cool with never speaking to you again, because you treated us like shit for 48 hours over a single missed cosplay meetup, and let someone else pay nearly four THOUSAND dollars for you to stay and eat with them at this convention, only to do this. Really tells me what kind of person you are, behind the screen.
Anyway! Moral of the story; I had a GREAT first convention experience and I genuinely do mean that. But it was in spite of this person, especially in the latter two days. Not because of it. And holy FUCK i am so tired of people who act like this! The self-centering goes crazy lately.
It's all good though. I got Two autographs and the BEST funko pop. And i got to meet a bunch of dear friends in realspace for the first time. That was a blast. And it'll STAY a blast. The beans i went with know who they are
