pull up a log
Tonightâs story is about power.
The kind you get by accident.
About laughter that spreads faster than orders, and a camp that humors you just long enough for the joke to feel real.
Sometimes leadership looks like strategy.
Sometimes it looks like a borrowed hat and a very patient cowboy.
â đ„
It starts as a joke.
At least thatâs what everyone thinks.
The hat shows up first â too nice, too clean, too not camp. Somebody found it in a supply crate that definitely didnât belong to anyone currently breathing dirt and bad decisions. You pick it up, turn it over once, then set it on your head just to keep your hands free.
It fits.
Which is already a problem.
Arthur notices the second you settle it. He doesnât say anything at first â just watches the way your posture shifts without you realizing. Chin a little higher. Shoulders squared like youâre testing how it feels to occupy more space.
Hosea looks up from his book, takes in the hat, then the stance, and his mouth quirks.
âWell,â he says mildly, âseems weâve got ourselves a change in management.â
You glance at him. âTemporary oversight.â
Arthur snorts softly, propping himself up on his elbow. âMm. Whatâs my position?â
You consider him like youâre reading a file.
âProbationary.â
Camp immediately perks up.
âProbationary?â Javier echoes, grinning.
Arthurâs brows lift. âThat right.â
You nod once, calm. âPending performance review.â
He leans back like this is the most entertaining thing thatâs happened all week. âReckon I better impress you then.â
You pivot, scanning camp like youâre taking inventory of a ship that might sink if you blink wrong.
âStatus reports.â
Bill looks around. âYou serious?â
Hosea answers for you. âYou heard the boss.â
Laughter ripples, but people play along because itâs more fun than not.
You nod gravely, as if this is a systemic failure.
You turn toward the horse line next.
âInspection.â you say.
Someone groans. âOh come on.â
You point to Sean. âYouâre up.â
âWhy me?â
âBecause you complained yesterday.â
Camp laughs again as Sean trudges off, muttering, and starts actually checking tack like heâs proving a point. Itâs ridiculous â and somehow completely effective. Within minutes, three more people wander over to help just because theyâve been assigned something.
Arthur watches the whole thing with a quiet, crooked smile, like heâs witnessing a perfectly executed con and heâs not even mad about it.
You step closer to him.
âSecurity.â
He looks up, amused. âPromotion?â
âTemporary.â
He nods solemnly. âI accept the responsibility.â
âPrimary duties,â you continue, ticking them off on your fingers, âwatch perimeter, deter nonsense, and refrain from starting fights unless absolutely necessary.â
Arthur huffs a laugh. âThat last oneâs tricky.â
âProbationary.â you remind him.
âYes, maâam.â
Hosea nearly chokes on his coffee.
For a while, camp leans into it fully â people giving half-serious updates, pointing out tiny âissuesâ like crooked bedrolls or a pot thatâs been boiling too long. The energy shifts from restless to playful, the kind of shared joke that makes everyone feel like theyâre in on something.
You move through it like you belong at the center of it, the hat shadowing your eyes just enough to make your expression unreadable.
Arthur falls in step beside you eventually, close enough that his shoulder almost brushes yours.
âYou always this organized?â he murmurs, low so only you hear.
âOnly when unsupervised.â
He smiles, slow and warm. âReckon we been runninâ this place wrong.â
Across camp, Sean calls out, âHorse line cleared! No mutiny detected!â
You nod approvingly. âGood work.â
âDo I get a raise?â
âTry again next quarter.â
Arthur laughs under his breath, shaking his head.
Thatâs when Dutch arrives.
Drawn by the sound of a camp thatâs suspiciously coordinated.
He takes in the scene â Sean reporting, Bill actually stacking crates, Lenny scribbling something like heâs documenting it â and finally you, standing there with that ridiculous, perfect hat.
âWell now,â Dutch says, voice edged with curiosity, âwhatâs all this?â
You meet his gaze evenly. âMorale initiative.â
Thereâs a beat â the kind where everyone waits to see if the joke ends or becomes something else.
Dutch smiles slowly.
âCarry on.â he says.
And just like that, itâs sanctioned.
Arthur leans closer as Dutch walks off, voice low and fond. âLooks like you got executive approval.â
You glance sideways. âProbationary.â
âOf course.â
By late afternoon the reports taper off, the joke softening back into normal camp noise. But the effect lingers â things are a little tidier, people a little lighter, like the structure gave everyone permission to breathe.
You finally pull the hat off, turning it in your hands.
Arthur watches, expression soft.
âYou done beinâ boss?â he asks.
You set it down beside you. âFor now.â
He nods, then after a moment nudges it back toward you with two fingers.
âKeep it,â he says. âCamp runs smoother.â
Hosea lifts his cup from across the fire. âBest leadership weâve had in months.â
Arthur glances at you again, smile quiet but certain.
âYeah,â he says. âSecurityâs real motivated too.â
