Dry leaves crushed beneath Xion’s boots, the most satisfying little crinkle and pop noises. She took oblong or short steps to ensure maximum crunch as she followed Lea along the old hiking trail. It was too narrow for them to walk side-by-side so she followed in file. The sunset washed the mountain side in golden glows, a distant, burning star slid beneath the horizon. The oak tree boughs wavered in the gentle wind, the most pleasant breeze chasing away the sweat from Xion’s brow, built during the midday heat.
The trail curved around steep cliff edge, cresting the mountain summit. It gave them an impressive view of the path ahead, miles and miles and miles of mountain range. Xion clambered up onto an outlooking rock and fetched her water bottle from her bag. She took a large and long sip, capped it again, then returned it. Wiping droplets from her lips with the back of her hand she looked down at Lea and said:
“You know we’re lost, right?”
With that proclamation in the air and the sky darkening into evening, Xion shrugged. “I haven’t seen a trail marker in hours and I was following you so I thought you knew where you were going.”
Xion brightened visibly, this was just like when she was on the run from the Organization. Out in the wilderness, nothing but what she could carry and her wits. It was exciting, a nice return to pace.
“So... That means we’re camping right?”
