Some tips from me

Written and spoken Finnish differ from another so learning to listen spoken Finnish can be a bit challenging. Cartoons and such are pretty much always a mixture of written and spoken Finnish, or more written Finnish.For example “He said I was ugly!” Written: Hän sanoi, että (minä) olen rumaSpoken: Toi/Se sano mua rumaks  or Toi/Se sano, et mä oon ruma! 

You do not need to use I/me or she/he with verbs, as the verb tells who we are talking about:I am pretty = (Minä) Olen kaunisYou are pretty = (Sinä) Olet kaunisI will go out = (Minä) Menen ulosYou will go out = (Sinä) Menet ulos

We do not have future tense (will) in Finnish. I go out and I will go out both are “Minä menen ulos”. If you are specially planning to do something in the future, you can use verb aikoa (plan to); I plan to go out on Friday with friends = (Minä) Aion mennä ulos perjantaina ystävien kanssa.

Finnish have no gender pronouns, only one “hän”. Works for he/she/they. Though everyone in Finland prefers others as “se”, it. Honestly, everyone is simply IT. 

You can also point other people as “tuo” (that, that one), or spoken version “toi”. For example: He won’t play with me = Toi ei leiki mun kanssa (spoken). 

We do not have “please” in Finnish. You can say kiitos (thank you), when you want to be polite.

We do not have the, a or an. If you want to specify something as the, you use “se” (it), but only if you REALLY need to underline the subject. Otherwise the listener/reader does know that you are referring to the same thing.For example: “I’ve got a dog. Yes, the dog I spoke about with mom”.“Minulla on koira. Se koira, josta puhuin äidin kanssa.”
