I just watched NatGeo's Finding Atlantis (just found out the doc actually released 3 years ago but whatever). Basically their (Dr. Richard Freund and co.) theory is that Atlantis located on Dona Ana, southern Spain. Possible archaeological site, check (proved by satellite images and ground photos that showed a pattern on the soil, which is possibly a layout of a city). Proof of tsunami which said to be Atlantis' end, check.
Interesting and intriguing...
But yea
1. Why did they carbon dated the statuettes? Okay it could be used to deny the whole theory if the result came up as 'too young', which is unlikely since eh, stones, you know, most of them are thousands year old? Anyway based on my own experience on Muaro Jambi, locals love it when their territory is claimed as archaeological site. More tourists, more income. So they 'litter' 'artifacts' on the ground. "Hey we suddenly found 2 statuettes above the ground!!!" sounds kinda suspicious imho.
2. The surrounding site only seen as 'ritual city' is sort of... weird? Their theory is, after the tsunami, surviving citizens of Atlantis fled there, andĀ made a miniature of Atlantis to memorize the greatness of their city. It's a monument. A tribute. Probably their way to show their gratitude for the gods because they are saved. No matter how proud human can be, I think survival always comes up first? Okay so maybe they settle up first, built the actual stone city of temples and barely settlements later. The settlement, since it's temporary and made of organics would be destroyed and leave no trace. But where did they got the resources? It was mentioned that the slate which is used isn't found nearby but rather closer to the destroyed-by-tsunami site (I think?). Again, imho it's also possible that the site was actual temples which was built around the time Atlantis was still around? Especially since there are more than one site. I don't really know much about Atlantian culture, but building temples that are away from the center of the city doesn't sound impossible to me.
