Nearly ten years ago creativity expert, Ken Robinson, explains here how education systems across the world need to be encouraged to change, pointing out that every single one would put the arts at the bottom of their priorities. By disregarding creativity I feel we disregard one side of our brain ..that’s a lot of wastage. Why would we ignore the potentials of the right side of our brains? I assure you many adults do, in both work and every day life, is this because they were steered away from creative professions as a child? By undermining typical and generalised professions such as ‘artist’ or ‘musician’ we undermine a plethora of skills.

By encouraging creativity and play in children for as long as possible benefits them in a variety of ways, this encourages independent learning. Play allows children to make as many mistakes as possible without any form of punishment. In Sweden, Finland and poland children are not sent to school until the age of 7, the assumption that starting school at an early age is beneficial is not supported well and it seems that giving children the extra years freedom. Strangely enough it is these countries that come out on top when comparing academic performance. Perhaps less is more? Perhaps education is squandering children's abilities and talents..
