Doragon Booru: Shenron no Densetsu
Dragon Ball: The Legend of Shenlong
Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies
Let me get this out of the way first, I’m a big Dragon Ball fan! Perhaps even more important I have very fond memories of Dragon Ball Movie 1. It was 1998 I was in 2nd grade and I had discovered Dragon Ball Z on Toonami on Cartoon Network. My dad and I went to Blockbuster to see if they had any DBZ on VHS. I found two tapes (mis)labeled Dragon Ball Episode 1-2 and Dragon Ball Episode 3-4. Later I found out that the first one was Dragon Ball Movie 1 and the second one was Dragon Ball Episodes 1-3. Back to the story I got home and was shocked to see Goku was a kid, but I loved it!
So, what is this? This is not Z. The fate of the world is not at stake, it’s not all about fighting, and no one’s power level is over 9000!!!!! It is a fun mystical adventure. Here’s a brief overview. The evil King Gurumes has been turned into a monster that is constantly hungry due to his greed for rare blood rubies. No, that doesn’t make any more since if you watch the movie. But, there are seven magical Dragon Balls that can grant (almost) any wish if all of them are brought together. So, the king sends two lackeys, Pasta and Bongo, to collect them to solve his hunger problem. Even worse, while collecting the blood rubies the King all but destroyed a village. A resident of said village, a little girl named Pansy, decided to find the great warrior, Master Roshi (also known as 亀仙人/Kame-sen'nin/Turtle Sage or Hermit or 武天老師/Muten Roushi). At the same time a 16 year old girl named Bulma (ブルマ/Buruma), who is also looking for the Dragon Balls runs into a 12 year old boy with a tail, Son Goku (孫 悟空). When Goku’s Dragon Ball, a keepsake from his dead grandfather Gohan, is stolen by Pasta and Bongo, Goku and Bulma go on an adventure to get it back. They run into a shapshifting pig, Oolong (ウーロン/Uuron), the bandit Yamcha (ヤムチャ/Yamucha) and his shapeshifting cat Puar (プーアル/Puuaru/Pu’ar), and later Master Roshi and Pansy. I don’t want to give anything else away, so I’m going to stop there and let you watch the movie.
I’m sure your next question is, “Is the movie any good?” The short answer is yes, but let me expand on that a little. If you are familiar with the Dragon Ball series you may notice that this movie is quite similar to the first story arc, chapters 1-23, or the first 13 episodes. Basically they switched out Pilaf for Gurumes and condensed everything down to 50 min. Ultimately the new villains fall short of those in the main series and are pretty forgettable, but they get the job done. I would have to say I feel the series tells the story a little better, but this movie is a great way to expose someone to the series to the first time or to re-experience the series quickly. Plus, the series is over 25 years old and the movie is nearly as old so the animation isn’t the best, but the movie holds up much better. I actually watched this movie three times; the old edited English version from 1996, the uncut redub from last year, and the original Japanese version. I would steer clear from the edited release for just that reason, it’s edited. The new dub is a big step up and pretty faithful to the original Japanese. But I think I would have to recommend watching it in Japanese with the subtitles on. It is hard to top Masako Nozawa’s amazing performance as Goku especially if you have any knowledge of the Japanese language. Overall it is a great movie and I would highly recommend it anyone with 50 min. of time on their hands. You won’t be disappointed.
