As I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and haphazardly turned on the news, the words that filled my dark living room suddenly caught my attention, “...and in 30 minutes, we’ll announce TIME Magazines 2017 Person of the Year!” Undoubtedly, this year has been filled with too many gut wrenching twists and turns to count... Who could they have possibly chosen? But then I heard, “...and TIME Magazines Person of the Year for 2017 is: The Silence Breakers. Dedicated to all of the women who have given a voice to sexual assault.” I was elated. I was thrilled. It wasn’t just a person- it was a group of incredibly brave people who came forward to share their story so that together, their individual voices would cumulate into a unified roar that would not be ignored. Finally, the world would understand that we are survivors and we are fighters and we will not be silenced. So, tell me why people see the need to pick this apart? It makes me absolutely sick to my stomach that people are seriously criticizing one of those brave people. It makes me so incredibly angry that anyone would have the audacity to minimize that persons experience because of who they are. Can you even begin to fathom what it’s like to be sexually assaulted and then forced to deal with it publicly? Please remember that Taylor is human. Every woman on that cover is human. Every experience shared was from a living, breathing soul who had to carry around that pain for longer than they needed to. It is not your place or mine to judge how or when or why someone shares their story. We can only control what happens next and I pray that we’ll be the generation who erases this unfair narrative. No matter who you are, we are ALL in this together. Despite the negativity, I will remain thankful, grateful, and proud that I look up to such an incredibly courageous and unstoppable force. Taylor- you’ll never know how much your bravery means to me, but hopefully one day I’ll get to tell you in person. I love you always. Keep blazing that trail ✊🏻❤️✨ @taylorswift @taylornation
