Checking my bank account really is a hero’s journey
The Ordinary World: I am going about my life spending money without a care in the world
The Call to Adventure: I make some larger purchases and think I should probably check where I’m at
Refusing the Call to Adventure: I avoid looking at my account for several days
Meeting the Mentor: my mom transfers me a bit of money to help with a necessary expense
Crossing the Threshold: I log in to the banking app
Test, Allies, and Enemies: Test—I answer my security question, allies—I see my TFSA is going up, enemies—I see how much I spent on coffee this month
Approach to the Inmost Cave: I go to check my credit card
The Ordeal: It’s more than I thought, the purchases have built up due to me ignoring them. I grit my teeth as I pay it off.
The Reward: my amount owing is back to zero. The stress lifts. I am free.
The Road Back: But wait, the strife has not yet ended. There is another charge in my authorized that has not yet been posted.
Resurrection: with the power of cash sent to me by my grandpa for Christmas, I replenish my chequing account and I slay the final credit card charge, emerging stronger on the other side.
Return With the Elixir: This is the only part that doesn’t occur. I am not changed at all by my journey and it will happen again a month from now.
