The Grand Comics Database notes that this story was inspired by "The Monster from Nowhere" by Donald Wandrei, which is almost correct. It shares a premise and one scene with a short story of that name by Nelson S. Bond, published in the July 1939 issue of Fantastic Adventures.
Donald Wandrei did write a short story about an amorphous being from beyond entitled "The Monster from Nowhere," printed in the November 23 1935 issue of Argosy Weekly, but it's about a creature of living metal rather than a three-dimensional manifestation of a four-dimensional organism. Interestingly, the earlier story does mention the fourth dimension, but not in the context of explaining the monster.
