Russell Hayes x Reader
Request by Anonymous: I donât really have anything specific but I just want some fluff between the reader and Russell and maybe some angst.
Summary: Y/N gets sick right before the Winter Haven dance their school was holding. Sheâs sad, leading her best friend to do the one thing any true best friend would do.
Warnings: Fluff, slight angst
A/N: This was cute, but I felt like I could do better. What do you think?
Y/N laid almost dead on her bed. Her face is pale and zombie-like. Her mom sat on the edge of her bed with her slightly larger hand on her head. âBaby, youâre burning up,â Y/Nâs mom said in a calm voice. Y/N moaned in pain as her mother pulled a thermometer from off her nightstand.Â
âOpen wide,â Her mother spoke, slowly inserting the small device into her mouth. â102 degrees. Wow, it looks like I'm gonna have to call you in.â
Y/Nâs eyes went wide. âNo!â she yelled out to her mother with a groggy voice. âI canât be sick. The Winter Haven dance is coming up, and Russell and I were gonna go⌠as friendsâ she cried out.
Y/Nâs mother gave her a sad smile before standing over her daughter. Her motherâs fingers moved towards Y/Nâs face, moving a strand of her hair away from her face as she said, âIâm so sorry honey. At least the dance isnât for a couple more days. You still have time to recover.â Her mother placed a kiss on her daughterâs head, ânow get some rest.â
Y/N looked down sadly. âOkay,â she said, turning on her side to face the cold window. She watched as tiny snowflakes fell from the sky, and landed on the 2-inch pile of snow laying on the roof. Her body was burning, but watching the outside world made her want to pull the covers up more.Â
A loud knock came from the front door. Y/Nâs mother left her spot from the kitchen table, where she had set up her work space for the day, and walked towards the door. She opened it to find the curly headed, brown eyed boy her daughter had become fond of at such a young age. Even though there was snow, the boy was still carrying his skateboard that Y/N gifted him on his 15th birthday, and he was wearing a thick coat over a black t-shirt and khaki pants.
âRussell? What are you doing here?â Y/Nâs mother asked with a smile.
Russell smiled back, âY/N didnât come to school today, so I decided to check on her.â
âOh, that is so sweet, but Y/N isnât awake right now. She wasnât feeling well this morning, so she took some medicine, and sheâs been out ever since.â
âOh, well could I come in? My mom kinda assumed that I would be staying here, and now Iâm without a ride,â Russell asked.
The girlâs mother opened the door a little wider, for Russell. âSure you can,â she responded.
As soon as Russell was inside the warm house, and the front door was shut, a loud collision came from upstairs. Y/Nâs mother and Russell stopped everything theyâre doing, and they ran upstairs to Y/Nâs room.Â
The two opened the door to find Y/N on the floor. Her mother quickly rushed over, helping her back onto the bed. âOh, Russell. I thought I heard your voice,â the girl said through slurred words.
âCome on, honey. Letâs get you back to bed.âÂ
Y/Nâs mother tried to get her on the bed, but the sickly girl kept resisting. âIâll get her, Mrs. Y/L/N,â Russell said, quickly moving towards the woman and her daughter. Y/M/N carefully slipped the girl into Russellâs arms. âIâll call your mom. I would hate for you to get sick also,â she said, leaving the room.
âHey, Mrs. Y/L/N!â Russell quickly called out.
Y/M/Nâs head slowly peeked into the room. âDo you think I could stay?â He asked. Y/N looked up at her mother with red puppy dog eyes, âPlease, mom? I feel better around him.â
Y/M/N could see her daughter was worse than this morning, but maybe letting her best friend stay would make her feel better about missing the dance. She looked from her daughter to the brown eyed boy, and with a smile, she gave them a small nod. And with that, she was gone. She could hear silent cheers from the room. She shook her head with a chuckle.
The Day of the Dance
Y/N was feeling much better after staying home for two days. When Russell came over, her mother gave him a medical mask, to keep him from getting sick. They stayed up all night watching movies. The next morning, I was feeling better, but my mom kept me home, just in case. Russellâs mom came and got him that morning to take him to school. And since then, I slept off any illness that remained from the previous night.
I guess the mask my mother gave Russell didnât work, because I was now standing at Russellâs door with a hot bowl of soup my mother made for him. The six foot seven white door opened to reveal Mrs. Hayes standing there with a wide smile. âY/N, how nice of you to visit,â She said, staring down at me with the same brown eyes Russell owned.
âYeah, well, I got sick, and Russell visited. So now, Iâm returning the favor,â I said. âAnd I brought soup,â I added, showing the woman the cup-like soup bowl.Â
She smiled at the gesture, and welcomed me in. âRussell will be so happy to see you. He was sad he couldnât take you to the dance,â Mrs. Hayes said.
I was confused. He was sad he couldnât take me? I shook it off and said, âWell, we were just going to go as friends, so itâs no biggie.â
Mrs. Hayes looked me up and down, like she was studying me. âAre you sure about that?â she asked, walking away.
Still confused, I left the hallway, and I made my way up the tall stairs. I made my way to Russellâs room and knocked. A small âcome inâ could be heard from where I was standing, so I let myself in.Â
Inside, Russell looked sicker than me. âY/N? What are you doing here?â He asked, sickly.
âWell, first off, I brought soup,â I said, moving closer to the boy. I carefully handed the boy the hot bowl of soup without spilling it everywhere. âThanks,â he said. I then smiled and sad down on the bed, next to his arm. I took the back of my hand and placed it on different spots of his face, like my mother would me. âAnd secondly, I came to repay the favor.â
âBut⌠the dance,â Russell said.
I looked at the boy lovingly. âI highly doubt the dance would be very fun without my dance partner,â I said, joking. Russell smiled. âSo, what are we watching tonight?â I asked.
âPower Rangers?â He asked. I nodded, sliding under the covers, and joining the warm boy under the covers.
âI really wish you went to the dance,â Russell said as we watched the Power Rangers theme song.Â
I looked at Russell, âI donât.â He looked back at me confused. âBut youâve been talking about it for weeks.â I grabbed the curly headed boyâs hand and said, âYeah, because I was going with you. I would never do anything without my best friend.âÂ
The boy gave me a bright smile, and our heads turned toward the tv. I laid my head on his. And for the rest of the night, that was how we laid.
