Day 1, 25th of September, royalty AU (pls forgive me, this is not betaed)
Here’s the thing about bisexuality. You can’t decide. Sometimes you wish you could, but most of the time you just wonder why it even matters so much. Deciding is simply inconceivable. You tell your father as much. A plant needs both water and earth to flourish, and he nods gravely at your words. Because, of course, after hours of trying to explain your situation to him, the simile about greenery is what makes him finally understand.
“I see your point,” at last “but you can only marry one person. Having both … I’m afraid such a thing won’t be possible, no matter who you will end up marrying. Unless you don’t plan on being faithful.”
Frey looks at you, pity mixed into the kindness of his eyes.
“I will respect your wish, but you need to choose. Decide what it is you expect from life, what you want your future to be like. Regardless if male or female, I will bless whichever union you desire. But decide you must.”
And so you count your blessings, knowing that as a second prince you enjoy more freedom in choosing your future intended that your older brother Fjölnir, first-born son and heir to the throne, did when his time to settle down had come.
A couple of days later you tell your father and king that your bride shall be a woman, because family matters to you and you can’t envision your future without one of your own. Your heart feels like it’s made out of lead and you feel miserable, but still you utter the fateful words. It’s the easy choice to make. The cowardly choice a vicious voice inside your head whispers. But you’ve never been a fighter and the gods know fighting biology itself and its stupid limitations would be a lost cause, even for the bravest of warriors.
A week before the wedding is to take place your bride-to-be arrives at the court of Alfheim. She is one of the countless children of the notorious Lord Loki and the rumors of her fiery temper precede her. Alex Fierro is her name, a highborn Jötunn, the noble blood running through her veins making her a suitable candidate to become your wife seven days from now.
Your cousin Annabeth and your bride’s maid of honor, your soon-to-be sister-in-law Samirah, occupy Alex’s attention the entire day of her arrival. You daren’t approach her, because even from afar you can tell she is of great beauty. Green hair, petite stature and two-toned eyes that you hurry to look away from every time she lifts her gaze towards you. Yep, definitely a coward the voice in his head confirms.
It takes a few hours for you to finally gather your courage and decide to escort your betrothed from her quarters to the dinner held in her honor. You knock and are soon greeted by a gorgeous person wrapped in a mixture of pink and green that you can’t help but gawk at.
“Are you just planning to stare or is there a point to you being here?”
“What? No! I mean yes, there is a reason I’m here, but I wasn’t s-staring!” you stammer awkwardly.
“My, my, you’re an eloquent one, aren’t you? Well, what is it then? Out with it!”
“Lady Alex, it would be a pleasure if you’d allow me to accompany you to –“
“It’s lord.”
“Huh?” you inquire intelligibly.
“It’s Lord Alex not Lady Alex. Sam insisted that I wear a dress today, it being a formal and public occasion and all but I’m a man today.”
And indeed, as soon as he utters those words it becomes quite obvious to you that you are talking to a male. You don’t know how you could have mistake the person in front of you for anything other than a young man … regardless of the fact that they are dressed in female attire … and look stunning in it.
“My apologies! I had not realized –“
Your speech stops abruptly as something, a memory, suddenly comes to mind. Lord Loki of Jötunnheimr is rumored to be able to change his gender, to be male on one day and female on the next. Could his child possibly have inherited that fabled trait?
“Are you perhaps … Could you be …?” you start to splutter, your incomplete sentences making your fiancé raise a dark eyebrow at you curiously.
“You’re fluid, right? I mean your gender is, I mean …” Alex interrupts your embarrassing rambling with a chuckle and you feel like your regal uniform is far to warm a garment all of a sudden.
“I am.” Your future husband confirms with a smile and lets out a surprised yelp when you lift him up in your arms and swing him around happily, formal etiquette be damned.
Because Alex Fierro is the answer to all your prayers. You will never have to wonder again if you made the right choice by deciding to marry a woman, for Alex is all you could have ever hoped for and more.
You decide that giving your feeling an outlet in this uncharacteristic burst of bodily affection is totally worth the concussion he gives you afterwards by hitting you on the head so hard you see stars for a while. A headache starts to bloom underneath your skull during dinner and yet every time you look at Alex, at your future, you can’t stop smiling.
