Hiatt Summer Fellowship Spotlight: Isabella Brooke ‘20 at Field First

This summer, I worked as an intern at Field First, a progressive political consulting company. Field First helps organize and run campaigns for different people and organizations. They are on the lead campaign team for Senator Markey’s 2020 re-election, the Roe Act, Raise Up Massachusetts, Zero Debt Massachusetts, and many more! By helping Field First work on those campaigns I was able to meet Senator Markey many times and get to know his team as well as attend hearings for the Student Loan Bill of Rights, for the Roe Act, and many more. I also did a lot of networking and learned every minute I spent at Field First. It was one of the best experiences of my life!
Along with attending hearings and meeting some amazing people, spent a lot of time doing research for the different campaigns. My first big project was for the Markey campaign. For this, I needed to research all of the people who ran for a local government seat in all of the gateway cities. I spent multiple eight hour days researching who was running for city council in all of these different cities. I also discovered that there is a shellfish Board in Nantucket as well as many other obscure boards in different cities. Additionally, I designed flyers as well as wrote multiple facebook, instagram, and twitter posts.Â
I did so much for Field First over the course of the summer, and they did so much for me! I learned the importance of having a social media presence and how to use that to maximize my ‘brand’. I learned that I need to always stick to what I am passionate about and that I will be able to accomplish any goal if I do so. And, the most important thing I learned at Field First was how the people around Massachusetts are all making change and that hope is alive! By reading hundreds of postcards from five year olds to eighty year olds, I learned that everyone is working for a better future for Massachusetts and the country. All of those postcards, letters, and phone calls were read and they help all the decisions made. And all of them inspired me. They taught me that I have a responsibility to promote these causes that I am privileged enough to be working on, even at an intern level. Overall, working at Field First has truly changed my life and I am so thankful to have had the experience to work with such amazing people and make an impact in Massachusetts.Â
