Gorilla Army Flags
Looks like somebody on reddit was able to figure out what all the gorilla army flags in Beneath look like. Good thing, because I certainly couldn't catch a good glimpse.
We have four different flags, all purple and black. It's an interesting color choice because all the different ape species are associated with their own colors, purple being the gorillas'. Does that indicate that these flags only represent the army? If these flags stand for the ape polity in general, would this mean the gorillas are in charge as in the original book? If we have four different flags, is it possible they all have different purposes or meanings? If so, what?
Another recurring design element is that most of these flags aren't the typical horizontal rectangle. The first and fourth flags both have an extra square or two hanging off. It doesn't look like most flag shapes in real life I know of. I guess it'd have to be a new design trend that came about among the apes.
Something that can't be a new trend is the use of latin letters. Three of the flags use them or something similar looking. I have no idea what the letters could possibly stand for though. Some letters are reversed or extremely curved. Perhaps they inherited the latin alphabet but made some changes to it over time?
My favorite flag here is the fourth. It has essentially nothing in common with typical modern day flag design except for being a flag. It stands out from the other movie flags too; it has no recognizable letters. The squares hanging off give it an unique but symmetrical shape. The black shape in the middle looks like a tank to me which is weird because I don't think the apes have tanks. The thin horizontal black stripes end up reminiscent of a tank's tread too. If they dealt with tanks in history perhaps it ended up in designs somehow? Since gorillas are characterized as warlike in these decades, the tank allusion seems intentional.
I realize I'm never going to know the answers to my questions here, but I do hope some of the design choices from older movies make it into the reboot movies in the future. This would be one of those cases, a lot of these choices are actually really interesting or cool despite being minimal. I genuinely really love these flags, I think they make a lot of sense for the context we have. They'd probably make sense for some future gorilla groups in the reboot movies too.
