A Little Bit of Fiberworld Discourse: Bistitual
There is a conversation happening on the #knitsagram right now about the term "Bistitchual," as used to refer to someone who both knits and crochets. I would be bistitual, I do both, love both. I like this term, the jest and play in it. I find it a welcoming term, one that says I am seen, heard, and belong. I heard it first in a very queer LYS I worked at in Chicago's Andersonville. We used the term to mark our space as an LGBTQ space. We used it to signal to each other that we were queer. We joked about how bad we were at (project) monogamy, how we were bistitual or panstitual, hookers and tossers. We relished in stitching together our identities with the words we used.
I understand how some Bi people may feel attacked and mocked by the term, especially given how cis/het the fiber world is. For me, though, the term has been about claiming our space in the fiber community and saying "We are here! We are Queer!"

My Tunisian Entrelac Crochet class is on Friday, August 21 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight time, so you have until the day before the start… Read More »Last call for Fiberworld!
