Cloud stared blankly at the mess he had taken out of the oven. The cake was horribly crumbly around the edges and sunken in the middle. He had no idea where he went wrong. Again. Surely baking a cake shouldn’t be this difficult. He groaned in frustration throwing the oven mitts onto the counter. 

His younger brother was turning seven and he was attempting to save some money by baking the cake himself. Every attempt so far had been unsuccessful. Business had been good to him recently and he wanted to treat Denzel for his birthday- a nice meal, an outing to Kalm to see all the Christmas decorations, and a birthday cake. 

He didn’t have much of a celebration last year. Cloud was still trying to come to terms with his mother’s death and how he was going to care for a child to really remember that the date was coming up. He felt horrible when he realized he had missed it and tried to make up for it with take-out and a trip to the park to play in the snow. 

This year, he was determined for things to be better. And he’d start by finding someone who actually knew how to bake a cake.
