The moving truck rumbles over the gravel driveway.ย Spider barksย excitedlyย on the seat next toย him,ย maybe sheย remembersย this place.ย The old rustic cabin was a bit of a fixer upper.ย There were visible cobwebsย hanging fromย underย theย deck.ย The place wasย secluded,ย andย itโdย been a while since someone lived here.ย It would need some cleaning but from the outside there appeared to be no real damage to the house.ย The yard also needed to be mowedย a bit,ย at least some around theย house, so it was walkable. It was taller thanย Spider,ย andย he was sure the second he opened the door he would lose her in the undergrowth.ย ย
With aย sigh,ย he got out of theย truck, leaving the driver's side door open for Spider.ย She yips wagging her tail which makes her whole back shake. She does a little hop onto the centerย console,ย then another littleย hopย down onto theย driver'sย seat. The truckย was too high up for her to jump out by herself, so she stared at him yipping and wagging.ย He lets out a soft, breathless laugh at her adorable face.ย He lifts her little body upย until sheย is atย eye level with him.ย She stopsย yippingย but her tail keeps wagging. He brings her close andย nuzzlesย his face against hers. โI love youย my sillyย spihย der.โย He says in his pet voice.ย
He sets her down at his feet to let her run off and do her business. Heย wasnโtย too worried about her getting fleas or ticks in the tall grass.ย Heโdย gotten her a flea collarย knowingย sheโdย be more likely to get bugsย from their new proximity to the wilderness.ย It would need to be replaced in aย couple ofย months,ย and he would need to check later to make sure it wasย working,ย but heย wasnโtย worried.ย At least about the bugs.ย He was a bit worried thatย sheโdย run into a snakeย or bearย and get herself hurt. He assured himselfย heโdย hear a rattle or notice something as big as a bearย wanderingย by,ย but anxietyย doesnโtย tend to listen to reason.ย These thoughts bounced around his head as he walked around and opened the back of the truck.ย The door made a loud noise as it was pushed up.ย The sound madeย his shoulders and stomach flinch.ย It is just a door.ย There are only boxes inside.ย Despite that, a vivid image of someoneย emergingย from the back and lunging at him played inย the back ofย his headย as he grabbed the first box.ย ย
It took him a second toย muster the will power toย turn his back on the truck despite knowing it was just in his head.ย The box felt light as he carriedย it,ย but he was sweating a bit fromย anxiety.ย Approaching theย door,ย he grabbed the knob to ensure it was locked. To hisย relief,ย theย knob stopped him from turning it all the way.ย He braced the box between his bodyย and the doorย as he pulled the keys from his hoodie pocket.ย It made a quiet ear-piercing jingle that made him wince.ย It seemed like everything was too loud today.ย The door opened smoothlyย into the lightless house.ย It revealed a bland barren basement.ย The floor isย cold withย uncovered concrete. The walls were covered in shelves. Despite the basement being above ground, it wasย mainly meantย for storage.ย The stairs leading up to the main floor are straight ahead.ย He takes a deep breath to calm his racing heart.ย No one was in the house.ย He stood frozen staring at theย stairs,ย mustering the courage to go upstairs.ย ย
โFuck thisโ he saysย under his breath setting the box down on the cold floor.ย He went back to the car andย grabbedย hisย cane from where it was restingย against the passenger door.ย He catches it as it falls from the door opening.ย Itโsย metal and has more length than his pocketknife.ย He makes two clicks with his mouth and calls out โSpider!โย ย
She comes bounding out from the foliage jumping over patches that were difficult for her to walk through.ย Sheย wasnโtย quite a guardย dog,ย butย maybe sheย wouldย alertย if someoneย wasย inside.ย He waits until she stopsย byย his sideย to walk towards theย house.ย Sheย follows,ย seeming to understand her presence isย required.ย She trots into the house relaxed and unbothered.ย With Spider by hisย side,ย he was able to go up the stairs.ย Some of the steps creaked under his weight. Seeing him goย up,ย Spiderย followed after.ย She runs around the top floor excitedly. Her little paws patter on the floors as she lets out occasional yips of joy. He stays frozen at the top of the stairs for a few minutes listening.ย ย

Itย wasย dark outside now. He managed to get all the boxes inside after checking every room in the house.ย ย Spiders'ย stuff got set up first, and he was currently working on unpacking his bedroom things.ย He could hear her collarย clinkย against her metal bowl as she ate in the kitchen.ย The soundย echoed through the empty cabinย as he mindlessly unpacked the box in front of him.ย Itย containedย figurines and plushies of one of his favorite characters.ย He threw the plushies on the bed to be organized later.ย He took the figurinesย remainingย in the box over to his wardrobe.ย He configured them on top of his wardrobe until he was satisfied with their positioning.ย They only took up about half of the wardrobeโs surface.ย This place was starting to feel like his home...ย at least this bedroom was.ย He glances over at the clock on his nightstand. It read tenย forty-one.ย Heย wasnโtย feeling tired but decided to get ready for bed knowing he had to wake up early tomorrow to drive back and return the moving truck to avoid a late fee.ย Then he could visit the fishing shop when he got back to get whatย heโdย need to start his new job.ย ย
He was lying in bed. It was twelve fifty-three the last time he checked the clock.ย Spider was curled up on his right fast asleep.ย The house felt safe, butย heย stillย couldnโtย find sleep.ย Heโdย even taken some ediblesย in an attempt toย get a good amount of sleepย for tomorrow.ย Despiteย that,ย he was still unable to drift off.ย He glanced at Spider. She was laying on her back withย her paws reaching in the air. Her side was firmly pressed againstย him.ย With a sigh he rolls onto his stomach and looks out the window at the front of the bed.ย One of the most majestic sights meets him.ย ย
A beautiful white deer is eating grass in his backyard.ย Its white fur shines etherealย in the darkness.ย Standing at the top of theย slope,ย it lifts its head revealing aย marvelous set of antlers.ย A four pointer and more beautiful than anything he had in his collection.ย Theyย appearย rounded at the ends and look velvety soft. Thoughย itโsย standingย too far away for him toย seeย itsย eyes toย tell if the deer is albino or not.ย Itย didnโtย matter; it was so stunning. As if a star had graced Earth with a physical form.ย It was a sign and a mistake all in one.ย It was soย beautiful thatย he believed he could be better.ย ย

Getting his van back was egregious.ย Itย made living out in the middle of nowhere even more desirable.ย He knew he still needed to stop by the fishing store to get supplies, but he was relieved toย beย one step closer to collapsing intoย bed.ย Spider wasย already napping in the back of the van.ย Her little doggie bed wasย relatively secureย in theย back for long trips such as this one.ย ย
He pulls intoย a parking spotย in front of the shop.ย The sign readsย Priceโsย Bait โn Tackle.ย Spiderย immediatelyย rouses from herย nap. Her ears perk up in attentionย at the vehicleย stopping.ย She runsย upย between the front seats and nuzzlesย his elbow curiouslyย while he works up the confidence to go inside.ย His palmsย areย sweaty despite his iron gripย on the steering wheel.ย He stares aheadย atย the building.ย It appears to be made ofย oldย dark brownย woodย while the roof wasย made of some kind of metal.ย It definitely looked like one of the olderย and rundownย buildings in the community.ย His vision starts to get a little blurry and his breathing startsย gettingย heavier.ย Panic starts to set in at the prospect of going insideย until a small weight is lightly pressing against his chest.ย Spider isย standing on his lap with her back legs and bracing her front paws on his chest.ย He blinks and a few tears fall down his cheeks.ย Sheย cautiouslyย sniffs atย his chinย and perks up when he pets her side.ย When he looks down at her, she takes it as a sign of her job done and falls back to all fours.ย He looks towards the glass doors. Thereย wasnโtย aย noย animals allowedย signย visible.ย Places up here did tend to be looser with their animal policies. He cups Spiders face in his hands. โOkay baby,ย are you ready to go inside?โย He asked gently, hisย voiceย only shaking a bit.ย ย
She stares adoringly at himย withย herย squishedย face. He wipes hisย faceย with his sleeve,ย getting rid of any evidence of his breakdown before opening theย vanย door.ย Spider hops downย confidently much more comfortable getting out of the van than she was getting out of theย moving truck.ย Heย followsย her,ย letting her sniff around outside a bit before calling her to his side to go in.ย She trotsย dutifully at his side.ย ย
He opens the door and a little bellย ringsย from above him.ย It causes him to flinch slightly; Spider pauses at his side.ย The man at the counter glances up when the pair walks in.ย Heโsย wearing a muted red button up under brown fishing overalls with black straps.ย The bucket hatย heโsย wearing casts a bit of a shadow over hisย eyes,ย making him look even more intimidating. Heย quickly darts into an isle to hide from his gaze. Spider follows him unbothered by theย man at the counter.ย Her paws make a little patter on the wooden floors.ย He makes his way around the store until he gets to the hooks and lures section. He looks throughย them,ย eventually deciding on aย two-dollarย bobberย asย a starter.ย It wasย very basicย with the top half being red and the bottom half being white, but it wouldย doย as a starter. He takes a deep breath before bringing theย bobber to the front counter to pay. The man behind the counter watches himย walk up with a stern glare.ย The bobber makes a plastic clacking sound asย itโsย placed on the counter. The man looks down at the bobber before looking up at his face with a raised brow.ย
โThat all todayย kiddo?โ The man asks in a gruff voice. There was a bit of an accent to hisย words,ย but it was difficult to make outย with how low his voice was.ย The way he said it made it sound like he was disapproving of the purchase.ย He looks down nervously at the bait on the shelfย inย the counter facing him. He grabs a small container of bait and sets it next to the bobber.ย
โYessir.โ He says, forcing his voice to be steady. The man looks at the prices and types them intoย a cream-colored older model of cash register. He looks anxiously around the wall behind the man asย heโsย ringing up his purchases.ย Thereโsย more fishing supplies hung up behind him on the wall.ย Above one of the areas with supplies hung upย on the rightย is a sign thatย readsย retired GONE FISHING.ย To the very left is a small shelf with a radio and small boxes of hooks.ย Under that is large fish mounted on a wooden plaque withย a golden name plate with something inscribed in it. Though it was too far backย and too small to read from where he was standing. Under the fish was an older sign with the store name on it. Under the sign wasย another shelf, but this one had books on it and a lidded box. Heย didnโtย recognize any of the titles on the shelf.ย ย
โThatโll beย five dollars kid.โย He looks up from the cash register trying to catch his eyes.ย Insteadย heย looks down and gives all his attention to pulling a five dollar bill out of his wallet.ย In his periphery he sees the man shift behind the counter. He lets out a huff before asking โis that supposed to be a dog?โย ย
โExcuse me?โ He responds defensively and a little off guard. The man gestures and his gazeย followsย itย toย Spiderย who isย standing by his sideย with her whole butt wagging in excitement.ย
โIs er that little... critter following you there supposed to be a dog?โ He huffsย in responseย pullingย out aย five-dollar bill.ย
โYes, she is a dog.โย He places the bill on the counter to avoid accidental contact.ย ย
โAinโtย a proper dogโ Heย mumbles,ย swipingย the bill from theย counter and entering it into the register.ย The total rings up asย zeroย and he puts the items into a plastic back.ย
โIย havenโtย seen you around here. You just passing by or are you the one that just moved in?โย He was hesitant to give anย answer,ย butย heโdย be seeing this guy aroundย anyways. He sighs breathlessly before answering.ย
โYeah. I just moved in yesterday. Had to take the truck back today.โย He mumbled out an answer.ย He reaches his hairy arm across the counter.ย
โNameโsย John Price. Nice to meet you, kid.โ He hesitates before shaking Johnโs hand. It was a strong and firm handshakeย that he returned with equal firmness while giving his name. Johnโs hand recedes and grabs the bag with hisย purchases,ย placing it on the counter. โWell, Iย guess Iโll be seeing you around then.โย
He timidly takes the bag. โYeah. See you around.โ He says quietly before leaving. He opens the door and realizes Spider is still standing at the counter staring at John curiously. He makes a clicking sound to call her over. Her head whips around to the noise before looking back at John one last time and following.ย ย
He opens the door to let Spiderย hop inย first. It was better than having her jump on his lap. She scrambles into the back readyย to go back to the house as he sets the bag on the passenger seat.ย He buckles up before quickly leaning forward and gently hitting his head against the steering wheel. Even the littlest conversation was soย anxietyย inducing. He took a minute to calm down, taking deep breaths, before turning the car on and driving back to the cabin.ย
