F: Yes. It's awful. I don't ever want to get used to it.

New York native Feyer jumps into reality with his show Friday 3/1 at Trans Pecos in Ridgewood. Feyer is an artist that has caught our attention with his honest and notable wit, alongside his new video endeavor for “Stuck in a Video Game,” which has been on constant repeat. We caught up with Feyer this week as he gets ready for another amazing show that kicks off this weekend for an exclusive Indie 5-0.

1. What made you decide on the name Feyer instead of a complete moniker?

When I first created a Facebook page for my music, it was titled “Andrew Feyer,” which is my name. However, people started confusing my page with my personal profile, so I renamed the page “Andrew Feyer Music.” After a while, I decided that was too long, so I shortened it to “A. Feyer.” I made the official change to “Feyer” after being convinced by a friend that it flows better, and I wholeheartedly agreed. Since then, it has stuck. It seems fitting considering that most people call me Feyer anyway. It’s more exciting and unique than the ubiquitous first name Andrew. Fun fact: when I was in kindergarten, there were four Andrews in my class, so we all started calling each other by our last names. It seems to have stuck.

2. How long have you been playing in the NYC scene; as part of other groups and also as a whole?

I had my first official gig in NYC in 2011, back when I was playing bass in a metal band from high school. As far as my own project goes, I started going regularly to open mics in 2013, and began playing my own acoustic shows in 2014. Since 2016, I have been performing regularly with this current project, which has evolved into a full live band. We’ve hit many spots throughout the city and are starting to branch out into other venues in the tri-state area. Aside from my own project, I occasionally play keyboard and bass for other friends’ projects, and I’m still available to take on even more if I’m asked. I try to keep busy in the music scene.

3. How does songwriting come into play; is it a collaborative effort with any other writers as well?

Up until a point it’s been just me writing all of the music and lyrics myself, but lately, I’ve started branching out and working with other writers, whether it be one on one or at group feedback sessions. It certainly helps to have a second pair of ears before the official release, just in case there needs to be some crucial word or music changes that can take the song from 80% to 100%. I have also been working more with friends to co-produce, mix and master the music, rather than just doing it all on my own. This way, it feels more like a team effort, and others are able to bring ideas to the table that I otherwise would not have thought of.

4. What is your favorite part about playing live and what is your least favorite part?

My favorite parts are definitely getting lost in the music and feeling a sense of confidence that I don’t usually feel when I’m off stage, as well as seeing a visceral reaction from the audience. It’s very humbling to see that they’re entertained. My least favorite part has to be breaking everything down after the set. I usually come off stage quite tired and sweaty from giving my all, but I can’t officially relax until I scramble to get everything off stage and pack it all up. To make matters more difficult, we only have about 10-15 minutes to pack up everything before the next band goes on, so it’s truly a race against time.

5. Can we expect any additional shows in NYC this Winter and Spring?

My next confirmed show is on Saturday, April 13, at the Bowery Electric, supporting Cosmonaut and The Values. I am also working a few spring dates in CT, NJ, and Upstate NY. For the late spring and summer, expect even bigger shows at bigger venues, opening for bigger bands. Stay tuned for the excitement!
