a discussion of rape culture
a boy on my Facebook timeline posted this in response to this article. it's pretty sickening, and pretty (at least latently) misogynistic. "Okay, I saw someone like this article or something and I couldn't reply, so I'll put it up here. If you're going to do the classic "I don't care" Facebook reply, then I have no idea what you're doing on Facebook to begin with. TLDR: There is no rape culture and "all men" are not part of it. The article declares that all men are part of rape culture, it's main reason being that 99% of rapists are male. Nobody can know this statistic. Many cases of rape are likely unreported, especially when the victim is male. There is very little attention given to male victims of rape, and if a male is sexually assaulted, there are very few people for him to go to talk about it. Men being raped by both men and women is not taken seriously at all on either media or social media. There have been reports of women supposedly raping men on media such as the Russian hairdresser story (we all know that one) and anecdotes of males passing out at parties to wake up the next down next a women. Every time one of these stories pop up on Facebook, the comments are always the same, "You go girl!" "Show that man you're independent." You think men can go and report being raped if this is the common public reaction? Even if the majority of rape victims are female (and I agree that the majority of victims are nearly certainly female) it has nothing to do with all men being part of rape culture. Women rape, men rape, women are raped, and men are raped. Rape isn't a result of someones gender, it's a result of their own individual values and ideals. What even is rape culture. You use Marshall University's Women's Center's definition of: "Rape Culture is an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture. Rape culture is perpetuated through the use of misogynistic language, the objectification of women’s bodies, and the glamorization of sexual violence, thereby creating a society that disregards women’s rights and safety." Okay here's why there is no "rape culture" in our society: 1. Sexual violence against women isn't normalized or excused by media or popular culture. Possibly a few idiots thought sexual violence against women is normalized, but nobody cares what they think because they have no reasoning to back up their view, making it completely arbitrary. 2. Misogynistic language? What even is that? 3. Objectification of bodies can happen to both men and women. I agree it happens more often to women, but it does not endorse rape. 4. Where is this glamorization of sexual violence. In all my uninteresting life of watching many movies, reading many books, playing many video games, watching a number of plays etc you get my point, I have never seen any glamorization of sexual violence. I've seen glamorization of stealing, killing, and many other crimes, but never sexual violence. Provide to me some examples because by searching Google I could find none. 5. A society that disregards women's rights and safety? I know I'm for women's rights and safety. I know many of my friends and peers and pretty much everyone I know is for women's rights and safety. Nobody seems to be doing anything against. In fact, if anything, there is more support for women's rights and safety. We have international women's day, we have a minister for women in parliament (even though at the moment it's a dude so that pretty much defeats the purpose) and we are told many times at school and in the work force what you can do if you're a female and you need help. I think that's great that there's lots of stuff happening for women's rights and safety, so society as a whole certainly isn't against it. So basically we have no examples of a present day rape culture, and by no means are "all men" part of a non-existent rape culture. If you have a convincing argument I invite you to respond and maybe prove me wrong, but as I see it this article is foolish and meaningless." i'm going to post my response a bit later, because i don't have any words.
