Fields
I had prepared for everything. Extra food. Extra gas. A jacket in case of rain. But I couldnāt ever prepare for this.
I was standing in the middle of a big field, grass waving in the slight breeze. I looked around. Just a second ago, I was driving along the road in my car. I had planned a weekend trip across the country. But I had no idea of where I was. Or where my car went.
I wandered the fields for something which felt like hours. My watch stated that it was 15:45, but when I looked again what seemed like an hour later, it was still 15:45. The landscape wasnāt changing at all, but I knew I was moving, because I made a path through the tall grass. I walked and walked, not really knowing why. I just felt like walking. I had to find something.
In the end, I noticed something strange. I didnāt get tired. My backpack went the same place as the car, and I had gone without any nutrition for possible hours. But I walked and walked without any change in pace or feeling. My feet didnāt hurt, and my stomach didnāt ache. A sudden impulse made me start running. And I kept running. I didnāt get tired. It was really unnerving. I started doubting moving at all, when I suddenly saw a figure far in the distance. I sped up even more, desperate to get any information of where I was. I ran and ran. In the end it took horrifyingly long to reach the figure. The feeling of running without tiring was maddening. It felt amazing at first, but it became a rythm, and the lack of pain and heavy breathing felt unnatural and creepy. I tried running even faster, stretching myself to the limits, but I didnāt feel tired. At all.
And at last I reached the figure. It must have been days. The landscape were about to drive me crazy, the only hint of sanity were the thought of seeing this figure and hopefully getting my answers. It was a man. He watched me silently from behind a blank mask. I stopped in front of him, getting ready to ask my question. He hed up a hand.
I know.
I know why youāre here.
You want to know why.
Everyone wants to know why.
I canāt answer.
But I can send you back.
I nodded exitedly. Yes. I wanted to og back. I wanted to see more than just these fields. I wanted to feel the tiredness of running and the changing of the weather. I wanted it back.
I would like to propose something.
I would like to propose you stay here.
You will never age.
You will never tire.
If you continue this way, he pointed behind himself.
Youāll find a city of peple.
Like you.
I canāt guarantee your sanity.
But It will be better than
He didnāt get any further. I shook my head, forcing a word from my lips. āNoā. I wanted to og home. Nothing was better than home. The man nodded, his mask showing nothing of his emotions behind it.
Very well, then.
He waved his hand in front of me, and I fell into the darkness.
I woke up in the hospital, a week later.
